이 연구는 오늘날 한국사회에서 불교의 가르침을 토대로 사회참여운동을 전개해 나가고 있는 ‘정토회’를 분석한 것이다. 역사적으로 사회참여적인 측면에서는 소극적이었던 불교공동체가 1990년 중반부터 종단의 개혁과 함께 사회참여 노력을 시도해 왔으나 그 성과가 미미했다. 그러한 가운데서도 종단 중심이 아니라 재가자 중심으로 활동하는 ‘정토회’는 기존의 불교공동체가 안고 있던 한계들을 극복하고 나눔의 사회참여활동을 체계적이고 지속적으로 이어가고 있다. 정토회는 ‘상구보리 하화중생(上求菩提 下化衆生)’이라는 대승불교 근본정신을 사회참여사상으로 토대 삼으면서 대중들의 삶과 가치에 파고 들어 재가자들을 사회참여로 이끌고 있다. 타 종교인들뿐만 아니라 일반 인들까지 포섭하여 불교 가르침에 근거한 체계적이고 조직적인 사회참여 활동을 이어가는 모습은 현 한국사회가 소통의 사회로 나아가는 데 중요한 역할을 하고 있다고 평가할 수 있을 것이다. 사회참여운동에서는 범세계적인 복지문제의 영역인 환경，인권，평화 운동으로 나누어 전개하고 있다. 정토회는 불교의 가르침이 우리들의 삶과 긴밀한 상호연결 속에 있음을 위 문제들을 통해 이해시키면서 재가 자들을 사회참여로 이끌어내고 있다. ‘바른 불교，쉬운 불교，생활불교’를 기치로 일상적인 사회활동과 수행이 하나라는 것을 실천하고 있는 것이다. 정토회의 회원들은 기존의 종단에서 활동을 이끄는 특정 지도자를 따르는 제자가 되기보다는 자신의 인생을 행복하게 만들어 나가는 수행자가 되는 것을 목표로 하고 있어，기존의 종교단체가 지닌 사회참여의 한계를 넘어서고 있다. 재가자 중심으로 나눔의 사회참여활동을 확산시켜 나가는 정토회의 활동은 새로운 종교 운동의 방향을 제시한다는 측면에서 그 의미가 크다.

This study examines the “Jungto-Society,” which has been carrying out a social participation movement based on the teachings of Buddhism in Korea. Since the mid-1990s, the Buddhist community, which used to be passive in terms of social participation, has endeavored to socially engage as well as to reform the monastic order, but the results were not yet significant. Nevertheless, the Jungto-Society, a community based on lay Buddhists, rather than the monastic order, overcomes the limitations of the traditional communities and continues to systematically conduct the social participation activities of sharing. The Jungto-Society is based on the philosophy of Mahayana Buddhism, ‘Sanggubori Hahwa Jungsaeng(上求菩提 下化衆生)’ and encourages the lay Buddhists to be socially participated by digging into the values of public life. The systematic and organized social participation activities that are founded on Buddhist teachings, which cover not only other religious people but also the public, can be considered to play an important role in creating an atmosphere of communication in the Korean society. The Jungto-Society leads social participation movements by dividing them into environmental, human rights, and peace movements, which consider global welfare problems. It tells lay Buddhists that Buddhist teachings are closely connected with our lives, leading them to social participation. With their mission of ensuring “right and accessible Buddhism for all," they prove that daily social activities and religious practices are compatible. The members of the Jungto-Society aim to become practitioners who make their lives happy, rather than disciples who follow a particular leader in the existing monastic order, and this aim helps them to overcome the limitations of the social activities of traditional religious groups. The spreading social participation activities of the Jungto-Society among lay Buddhists is significant since it spreads out the activities of sharing consistently and systematically through the religious values in present-day Korean society, where social movements have little influence.
