‘성誠’은 『중용』뿐만 아니라, 모든 유교 철학의 핵심적인 개념 가운데 하나이다. 생명철학 및 생성론의 입장에서 볼 때, ‘성誠’ 개념은 서로 구분되면서도 관련되는 다중의 의미를 담고 있다. 첫째, ‘성’은 하늘과 땅의 구성원리를 의미한다. 즉 ‘순수하고 참된 존재’로서의 ‘지성至誠’은 모든 혼잡하고 순간적인 존재자들을 ‘순수한 유’와 ‘순수한 무’로 분해시켜 ‘두텁고 넓은’ 대지와 ‘높고 밝은’ 하늘을 구성하여 모든 존재의 기초를 구성한다. 둘째, ‘성’은 ‘이룸’(成)을 의미하는바, 이는 또한 천지가 만물과 인간을 낳고 하나의 우주생명을 구성해 나가는 과정을 가리킨다. 이런 의미에서 볼 때, 만물은 우주의 몸이고 인심은 우주의 마음이다. 셋째, ‘성’ 개념은 인간 도덕과 사회생활의 기초인 ‘믿음’을 가리킨다. 공자는 『논어』에서 경제적 기초와 군사력, 그리고 백성의 믿음을 정치의 중요한 요소라고 주장한다. 이 세 가지 요소들 중에서도 국민의 믿음을 제일 중요하다고 지적했다. 그 원인은 믿음이 있음으로 하여 비로소 사회의 도덕적인 질서가 확립될 수 있기 때문이다. 그래서 『중용』에서도 솔직함과 성실함을 키우는 것이 “인간의 도”라고 규명한다. 요컨대, 『중용』의 ‘성’ 개념은 유교의 우주생명 의식과 인간공동체 의식을 잘 나타내고 있다. 오늘날 생태에 대한 문제의식과 아울러 인간에게는 개인주의를 초월한 새로운 자아의식을 요구하고 있다. 그리고 국민 사이의 솔직하고 성실한 소통이 건강한 민주주의 발전에 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 여기서 우리는 또 다시 유교 전통 철학의 생명력과 가치를 발견하게 된다.

Concept of ‘Sincerity’ is a core one in Doctrine of the Mean and the Confucian philosophy. From the point of the existential philosophy, the concept of ‘sincerity’ includes three meanings which are different and interrelated between each other. First of all, the ‘sincerity’ refers to the becoming principle of heaven and earth. That is, ‘sincerity’ as ‘the existence of pure and true’ is the foundation of existence of all the beings because it keeps deviding them into ‘something’ and ‘nothingness’ and retains them as ‘Thick－thin’ of the earth and ‘High－ Bright’ of the sky. Secondly, the ‘sincerity’ means the process of generation of all the things and the human beings from heaven and earth which constitute universe as a life. From this perspective, all things are the body of universe and human hearts are the soul of the universe. Finally, the ‘sincerity’ refers to the ‘straightforward’ and ‘trust’ which constitute the basis of person’s social life. Confucius believed that social life includes three important elements: the economic base, military strength and the confidence of the people in the ruler, of which the most important thing is the confidence of the people in the ruler. That is to say, trust is the premise of the establishment of a moral community. So, Zisi said “Making oneself sincere is the Way of Man” in Doctrine of the Mean. In short, the concept of ‘sincerity’ in Doctrine of the Mean fully reflects the concept of universe as a life and sense of community in Confucian philosophy. Today, the awakening eco-consciousness requires us to establish a new self-consciousness that goes beyond the individualism and sincere dialogue is increasingly becoming to be the basis of constituting a healthy and democratic life. At this point, we will rediscover the vitality and values of the traditional Confucian philosophy.
