생산 자동화와 평균 수명 증대의 영향으로 현대인의 삶에서 여가시간이 차지하는 비중이 급속히 늘어나고 있다. 이에 따라서, ‘여가시간을 어떻게 보내는가?’ 하는 것이 삶과 문명에 있어서 참으로 중대한 문제가 되었다. 하지만 현대인의 실제적인 여가시간 사용을 보면 여가의 소외가 심각하다. 현대사회에는 삶의 낭비로서의 여가시간 사용, 부정적이고 파괴적인 방식으로의 여가시간 사용이 팽배해 있다. 이 글은 동양사상의 기반 위에서 창조적인 여가시간 보내기 방법을 모색하고자 한다. 현대인의 여가생활은 소외되어 있다. 소외의 근본적인 원인은 현대 인간관이다. 현대 인간관은 인간을 ‘분리된 자아’로 간주한다. 현대인의 여가생활은 ‘분리된 자아’를 자기정체성으로 삼고, 이 바탕 위에서 이루어지고 있다. 그 결과 현대인의 여가생활은 소중한 삶의 낭비를 초래하고, 자신과 이 세상에 부정적인 영향을 끼친다. 그러므로 ‘분리된 자아’로서의 자기정체성을 벗어나지 못하는 한, 현대인의 여가 소외는 피할 수 없다. 동양사상은 창조적인 여가시간 보내기를 위한 새로운 인간관적인 기초를 제공할 수 있다. 그것은 ‘우주적인 존재’로서의 인간관이다. 새로운 인간관의 토대 위에서 창조적인 여가시간 보내기의 의미는 명백하다. 이것은 분석적으로 보면 두 가지이다. 한 가지는 내 안에 잠들어 있던 ‘우주적인 나를 흔들어 깨워 활동하게 하기’로서의 여가시간 보내기이다. 이것을 ‘사랑의 능력 키우기로서의 여가시간 보내기’(수행)라고 한다. 다른 한 가지는 내 안에 살고 있던 ‘우주적인 내가 잠에서 깨어나 활동하기’로서의 여가시간 보내기이다. 이것을 ‘사랑의 즐거움 누리기로서의 여가시간 보내기’(낙도)라고 한다. 이 글에서는 여가시간의 창조적인 사용의 의미를 구체적으로 살펴보았다. 그것은 첫째, 나를 사랑하는 능력 키우기로서 여가시간을 보내는 것이다. 둘째, 너를 사랑하는 능력 키우기로서 여가시간을 보내는 것이다. 셋째, 사랑의 즐거움 누리기로서의 여가시간 보내는 것이다. 여가시간의 창조적인 사용의 함의는 크다. 현 인류는 현대 말·탈현대 초의 문명 대전환기를 살고 있다. 현 인류가 현대에 고착되어 있는 것이 문명 위기를 가속화시키고 있다. 현재는 현대로부터 탈피한 새로운 삶과 문명에 대한 비전을 필요로 한다. 여가생활의 영역도 마찬가지이다. 여가시간의 창조적인 사용에 대한 이 글의 논의는 인류가 새로운 삶과 문명의 미래를 열어가는 데 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

Leisure time is rapidly increasing because of the automation of production and the increase of the average life span. Therefore, ‘how to use leisure time’ becomes very important in life and civilization. But the alienation of leisure is very serious in real world. In modern society, the leisure time is used as the waste of life, and it is used negatively and destructively. The purpose of this paper is to search the ways to use leisure time creatively based on East Asian Thoughts, that is ‘to use leisure time with love’. The leisure life of modern people is alienated. The main cause of alienation is the modern view of human being. A human being is considered as a separated ego in modern view of human being. The leisure life of modern people is to pursue pleasure or to increase the value of the separated ego. The former is the leisure life as the waste of life, the latter is the leisure life that makes the destructive effects on himself and the world. If we can not free ourselves from the separated ego, we can not avoid the alienation of leisure in modern society. East Asian thoughts can provide a new basis for the creative use of leisure time. This is to view human being as a universal being. The meaning of the creative use of leisure time from the new view is clear. It can be analyzed in two ways. One is to use leisure time to build the ability of love. It means to use leisure time as practicing. The other is to use leisure time to enjoy loving. In this paper, the meaning of creative use of leisure time is reviewed in specific ways. The first way is to use leisure time in order to build the ability to love oneself. The second way is to use leisure time to build the ability to love another. The third way is to use leisure time to enjoy loving. The implication of the creative use of leisure time is important. The current mankind is living in the period of great transition of civilization from modern era to post-modern era. The fact that the current mankind clings to modern era accelerates the crisis of civilization. The current time needs the new vision of life and civilization urgently. That is the same in the area of leisure. The discussion on the creative use of leisure time in this paper can contribute to the progress of life and civilization.
