존재의 영원성을 보장하려는 ‘종교’는 일정한 의미구조를 통해 죽음을 해석하고 궁극적으로 그것을 넘어서려 한다. 그런데 죽음의 해석과 처리, 다시 말해 한계상황으로서 죽음을 극복(상대화)하는 방식은 모든 종교에서 꼭 같은 것은 아니다. 특히 동서양의 대표 종교라 할 수 있는 유교와 기독교는 전혀 다른 죽음의 이해 방식을 견지하고 있다. 양 종교는 죽음의 극복에 연루되어 있는 종교적 ‘보상논리’와 ‘보상주체’가 판이하다. 인간에 대한 존재론적 이해 방식도 전혀 다르다. 그 결과 기독교에서 죽음이 구원과 천년왕국으로 보상되고 신의 의지에 의해 그것이 초월적 차원에서 담보된다면, 유교에서 죽음은 인간의 기억으로 보상되고 후대(자손)의 실천에 의해 그것이 역사적으로 담보된다. 종교로서 유교와 기독교가 갖고 있는 여러 가지 특질 역시 이러한 각각의 죽음론으로부터 체계적으로 연역되는바 크며, 양 종교의 사회적 효과 또한 궁극적으로 이 죽음의 이해 및 처리 방식과 직·간접적으로 이어져 있다. 본 논문은 유교와 기독교의 죽음론의 본질을 규명한 다음 거기에 어떠한 정치, 경제적 함의가 내포되어 있는지 시론적 차원에서 따져 본 하나의 종교사회학적 시도이다.
Confucianism has been viewed mainly as having had a negative influence on social development since Max Weber’s theory of eastern societies. What role did Confucianism indeed play in the social process of Confucian society especially focusing on the Confucian viewpoint of ‘death’, this thesis intends to explain the religious logic of death and its social effects. Also this paper examines the difference between the cases of Confucianism and Christianity. The positive role of Confucian viewpoint of death is championed by this paper. In particular, ‘Confucian understanding of death’ and ‘human remembrance and some rituals as its religious solution’ were the core and basis for understanding political and economic effects in the Confucian society. Finally, this paper examines the religious significance of death inherent in Confucianism and Christianity and reveals how these became political and economic inducement in the actual historical process.
