본문은 퇴계의 여가활동과 도덕교육과의 관련성에 관해 논의하였다. 이 논의는 다음과 같은 두 가지 문제의식에서 출발한다. 하나는 현대 여가활동이 스트레스 해소와 신체단련이라는 오락위주의 여가로 전개되면서 자칫 소비 지향적이고 퇴폐적인 여가활동으로 전락할 가능성이 있음을 지적하면서 여가를 어떻게 전인교육을 위한 활동으로 삼을 수 있는가라고 한다면, 다른 하나는 도덕교육이 교과위주로 진행되면서 공허한 지식위주의 교육으로 전락하고 있다고 지적하면서, 어떻게 구체적인 일상생활에서 도덕교육이 이루어질 수 있는가? 하는 것이다. 본 논문에서는 양자를 결합하는 방식으로 양자의 문제점을 해결해 보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 퇴계의 여가행위에서의 도덕교육을 탐색해 보았다. 퇴계의 여가행위는 신체와 단련, 정신적 편안함과 같은 여가의 수단적 기능뿐만 아니라 도덕적 인격을 완성하는 데 목적을 두고 있으며, 그 목적을 달성하기 위해 敬공부를 중시하였다. 그래서 퇴계는 독서나 靜坐공부으로서의 경공부뿐만 아니라, 여가생활으로서의 경공부 또한 매우 중시하면서, 이 양자를 하나의 체계로 연결하고 있다. 본문에서 현대사회가 여가적 삶이 강조되고 있는 만큼, 퇴계의 엄숙하고 고답적인 사변적 수행론이 아닌 여가활동을 통한 경공부에 초점을 맞추어서 논의하였다. 퇴계는 자연감상을 통해서 사사로운 욕심이 없는 무욕의 상태를 보존하고자 하였고, 투호를 통해서 구체적인 일에 집중하여 외물에 흔들리지 않는 ‘主一無適’의 공부를 하고자 하였다. 그래서 퇴계는 도덕교육과 여가활동이 하나의 행위로 보고 있음을 알 수 있다.

This thesis has discussed on the relationship between leisure activity and ethics education of ToeGye. This discussion starts from the following two types of critical mind. One is how leisure time can be considered as an activity for the education of whole man by pointing out the fact that modern leisure activity has possibility of easily falling into a consumption oriented and decadent leisure activity as it gets developed into an amusement centered leisure time called relieving stress and physical training. The other one is how the ethics education can specifically take place in daily life by pointing out that the ethics education is falling into a hollow knowledge based education as it gets performed based on the course. This thesis has tried to solve the problem with a method of combining both factors. To make this possible, the ethics education in the leisure activity of ToeGye has been investigated. The leisure activity of ToeGye sets the purpose in completing the ethical character as well as the method oriented function of leisure time such as physical body, training and mental comfort emphasized on Gyung(discipline) to accomplish this purpose. Therefore, ToeGye emphasizes a great deal also on Gyung as leisure activity as well as Gyung(敬) as reading or Jingzuo(靜坐) to connect both of these factors as one system. In this thesis, as much as the leisure life is being emphasized in modern society, the discussion was performed focused on Gyung(敬) through leisure activity which is not the serious and abstruse discipline theory of ToeGye. ToeGye had tried to preserve the state of selflessness without personal greed through appreciation of nature and tried to perform the study of ‘Attentioning the mental unified(主一無適)’ without being shaken by external objects by concentrating on specific work through Touhu. Therefore, we can see that ToeGye is considering ethics education and leisure activity as one form of action.
