2010년 5월 30일, 세속을 떠나 출가하여 생활하던 불교수행자 문수스님이 소신공양을 통해 이명박 정부로 하여금 사회 불평등을 해결하기 위해서 적극적으로 나서라고 촉구했다. ‘도대체 불평등이 얼마나 심각한 문제이기에 소신 공양까지 감행하면서 그 해결을 촉구하였을까?’라는 상상력은 우리사회의 불평등의 원인과 정도에 의문을 갖게 하지만, 다른 한편으로는 ‘출가자가 왜 불평등문제 해결에 관심을 가질까?’라는 생각은 사회 불평등에 대한 불교적 정당성을 찾아보도록 유도하기에 충분했다. 이에 이 글에서는 이명박 정부 등장 이후 국가가 불평등을 해결하기 보다는 오히려 부추겨 왔음을 실증하였을 뿐만 아니라 불교 경전에는 사회 불평등에 대한 정부의 개입과 관련되는 근거들이 명확하게 존재하고 있다는 사실을 간략하게 제시하였다. 물론 불교는 국가의 정책적 개입이 강제적이고 폭력적인 성격을 띠어서는 안 된다고 주장한다. 마치 꿀벌이 꽃에는 아무런 해악도 끼치지 않으면서 꿀을 채취하는 것처럼, 국가도 ‘국민들에게 해악을 끼치지 않는 방법으로 그리고 세금을 거두는 등과 같은 정책적 개입을 통하여’ 불평등을 해결해야 한다. 또한 자업자득의 논리를 가진 불교의 관점에서 보면, 행위자 자신이 탐ㆍ진ㆍ치로부터 자유롭게 되어 자발적인 자비행을 실천하는 것이야말로 사회 불평등을 극복하는 궁극적인 해법이라는 행위 윤리적 측면도 존재한다. 요컨대 사회 불평등에 관한 불교적 해법은 구조적 차원에서 국가에 의한 정책적 개입과 행위적 차원에서 행위자의 적극적인 자비행을 동시에 요구한다. 그렇다면 이 글의 실천적 함의, 즉 한국불교의 사회참여와 관련된 실천적 함의는 다음과 같다: 최근 세계적인 흐름을 정면으로 부정하는 논리라 할지라도 불교는 세속의 논리를 따르기 보다는 불교의 출세간적 논리를 추구할 수밖에 없는 바, 한국불교는 신자유주의적 세계화뿐만 아니라 이명박 정부의 정책에 정면으로 배치되는 개입방법을 실천해 나갈 수밖에 없다.

During the last three-year tenure of President Lee has increased social inequality in the Korean society tremendously. As this government was launched, President Lee and his government have pushed ahead the doctrines of the neoliberalism like deregulation, flexibilization, and privatization more than ever. In this frame, Lee's government has amended the fair trade act, in which has been abolished the ceiling on total amount of shareholding of other domestic companies and deregulated the law on the financial holding company. With permitting Business Capital Market Integration Act has this government helped self-financing of big companies. The big companies could have strengthened in this process their market power. By the way, policy of lower taxation has turned out favorably for wealthy persons. On the contrary, Lee's government has cut down expenditure of social welfare severely. Consequently, quality of the ordinary people' life has been gradually getting worse and as well as level of polarization in our society. This government has turned away and gave no proper answer to this situation. Buddhist Priest Munsu has requested political and social engagement of buddhists through self-immolation(燒身供養) so as to reverse present nonintervention policy of state. From this point of vew, this article aims to analyze cause of social polarization owing to neoliberalism and, therefore, to explain, how intervention and active role of state could be possible in the meaning of the Buddhism.
