한국 사회에서 다문화에 대한 담론이 확대되고 있다. 그러나 현실은 여전히 자민족중심주의 시각에서 벗어나지 못하고 있는 것도 사실이다. 결혼이주 여성들에게 동화를 강요함으로써 그렇지 못한 다문화가족 여성들 다수가 편견과 차별, 배제 등으로 고립된 생활을 하고 있다. 그들이 한국 사회에 정착하는데 어려움을 겪고 있는 사실은 부인할 수 없다. 이러한 현상을 방치할 경우 결국은 갈등이 구조화될 수밖에 없고 마침내는 보다 큰 사회적 비용을 감수할 수밖에 없을 것이다. 일방적인 동화주의가 아니라 문화적 다름의 어울림이라는 관점에서 결혼이주 여성들이 자신들의 정체성을 유지하면서도 삶이 가능한 개방적 사회로의 인식의 전환이 필요하다. 한국사회가 폐쇄적 집단주의나 완고한 가족주의를 극복하고 다문화 사회에 걸 맞는 평등과 조화, 다양성과 관용을 성숙시켜 나가야 한다. 그렇게 된다면 결혼이주 여성들이 한국사회의 문화나 가족생활에서 만족감이 높은 생활을 영위할 수 있을 것이다. 본 글은 결혼이주 여성들의 가족만족도를 경험적 조사연구를 통해 살펴보았다. 그 결과 조사대상 이주여성들 절반 정도가 결혼중개업체를 통해 한국인 남성들을 만났으며 그들 대부분이 한국에 대한 정보와 지식을 제대로 접하지 못한 상태로 한국인 남성과 결혼생활을 시작하고 있었다. 때문에 결혼 초기 1-2년 간에는 적응하는데 어려움이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 조사대상 이주여성들의 부부간 상호만족도와 가정생활 만족도는 높은 편이었고, 특히 자기 자신에 대한 자아존중감이 높을수록 가족만족도가 높은 것으로 나타났다.
Korea Society, for a long time, has been immersed in the mythology of a single nation. But recently, the argument about multiculturalism is increasing its importance more and more. In the time of globalization, no society can be defined as a monoculture. In Korea, a multi-cultural society is developing. In addition to traditional immigrants from Japan and America, recently we have meet often there people from East Asia. For Korea this does not mean just an old challenge but also an opportunity to develop further culturally. For exmple, the Renaissance was born as the Italians discovered the Greek civilization through the translation in to Arabic in ancient Babylon. But they are also a source that can bring a new culture, as was the case in the Renaissance. Korean culture has always been influenced by the other neighbouring countries. This paper is concerned with the multi-cultural family, expecially this study only considered the families consisting of migrant women and Korean men. This paper intends to examine it empirically and find the actual situation and problems of the multi-cultural family of Korea. In the problems of multi-cultural family, this study investigated issues on the process of marriage such as matchmakers and issues on the satisfaction of family, the process of settlement such as language, finance, education for children and so on. In conclusion, among many other multiple attempts to help them, it is ultimately important to recognize them as our own brothers and sisters. In order to keep both diversity and mutual understanding among cultures in the future, we must ease the incommensurability between one culture and another and elaborate a plan of constructing the truly public and dialogical space now.
