지금 인류는 삶의 방식에 대한 전환을 요구받고 있다. 이 요구는 사람이나 제도 의하여 요구되는 문제가 아니라, 환경 혹은 지구가 인간에게 하는 요구이다. 소유에 대한 과도한 갈망과 극단적인 쾌락추구 그리고 결과제일주의적인 삶이 자연에 가한 용량을 넘어선 부담이 이제 부메랑이 되어 돌아오고 있는 것이다. 지금 우리는 쾌락과 소유의 극대화를 행복의 극대화로 착각하는 반인간적이고, 반사회적인 시대정신 속에서 살고 있다. 그러나 그러한 삶이 더 이상은 불가능하게 되어가고 있다. 이제는 삶의 패러다임을 바꾸어야 할 때이다. 무엇을 어떻게 바꿀 것인가? 첫째는 시장적 가치체계를 자기실현의 장으로 전환시켜야 하고, 둘째는 생존경쟁의 관계를 서로가 서로의 존재조건이 되어주는 연기적 협동의 관계로 바꾸어야하며, 셋째는 효용의 극대화를 인간을 포함한 존재가치의 극대화로 전환시켜야 한다. 이러한 전환의 시도에는 인간과 자연의 본성을 통합적으로 조망해 낼 수 있는 새로운 철학적 토대가 필요하다. 필자는 이 논문을 통하여 그러한 역할을 할 수 있는 대안으로 연기론을 제시해 보고자 한다. 연기론은 불교에서 보는 존재의 법칙이다. 이 법칙은 오늘날 인류의 삶의 양식에 동의하지 않는 구조를 가지고 있다. 세상이 연기적으로 존재함을 아는 각성된 인격은 세상과 사물을 보는 관점과 삶의 태도변화를 견인할 수 있다. 그리고 변화된 삶의 구체적인 방식은 오계의 실천으로 나타날 것이다. 오계의 실천은 그것이 종교적 금계이기 때문이 아니라 존재의 궁극성에 대한 각성에서 우러나오는 세상과 타인의 가치에 대한 본질적인 배려이고, 차원 높은 자비행이다. 이 자비야말로 인류가 자연으로부터 받고 있는 요구에 가장 적절하게 대응하는 행위방식이라고 생각된다.

Now mankind is pressed to change the way of life. This pressure comes not from people or institutions but from the earth. The burdens added to the nature by the excessive desire for the possession, the extreme pursuit for pleasure, and the life of achievement first, comes to mankind as boomerang nowaday. Now we live in an age of inhuman and anti-social spirit, where mankind indulges in stronger pleasure and more wealth. It is time to change the paradigm of life. What should be changed, and how should it be changed? First, the market oriented value system must be converted into that of self realization. Second, the relations based on the struggle for survival should be converted into the relations based on the "dependent origination" which becomes the condition of other's existence. Third, the maximization of utility value must be converted into the maximization of existence value as well as human value. A new philosophical foundation needs to realize such a conversion, which integrates the nature of both man and nature. As an alternative philosophical foundation, this study proposes the theory of dependent origination of Buddhism. The theory defines the law of existence in Buddhism, which defies the mode of modern human life.
