오늘날 마음공부의 중요성은 다각적인 측면에서 제기되고 있다. 마음공부는 현대사회에서만 이슈가 되는 주제는 아니다. 동서양의 전통 속에는 마음공부의 범주에 포함시킬 수 있는 다양한 이론과 실천이 있다. 이미 마음공부에 대한 다양한 논의가 전개되었음에 불구하고, 오늘날 마음공부의 필요성에 대한 논의가 새롭게 제기되고 있으며, 마음공부의 방법 및 목적 등이 학계에서 뿐만 아니라 사회적으로도 이슈가 되고 있다. 본 논문은 유가사상에서 말하는 마음공부의 궁극적인 목적과 방법에 주목하고자 한다. 본 연구자가 유가사상에 주목하는 이유는 유가사상이 여타의 사상보다 사회적 관계에 더욱 현실적인 해답을 제공해줄 수 있으며, 성숙한 개인의 삶이 더 좋은 사회를 가능하게 한다는 관점을 견지하고 있기 때문이다. 유가사상에서는 도가 및 불가사상과 달리, 마음공부를 위해서 도를 깨닫는 것 만을 주장하지 않고 덕 쌓기에 의미를 부여하고 있다. 본 논문은 다음과 같은 내용으로 구성되어 있다. 첫째, 『논어』에 나타나는 덕의 의미와 양태가 어떠한지 살펴볼 것이다. 이를 통해서 유가에서 강조하고 있는 덕 쌓기와 마음공부가 어떤 관계를 가지고 있는지 조명해 보고자 한다. 그리고 덕이 일상생활에서 발현되는 모습은 어떤지를 살펴볼 것이다. 둘째, 『논어』에서 도의 의미와 양태를 분석할 것이다. 이를 통해서 유가와 달리 도가 및 불가에서의 도의 의미를 비교해 보고자 한다. 셋째, 『논어』에서의 덕 쌓기와 마음공부의 관계를 분석해 볼 것이다. 마지막으로 유가사상에서의 덕 쌓기와 도 닦기를 통한 마음공부의 탈현대적 함의를 논의해 보고자 한다.

Nowadays the importance of mind training is emphasized in many sense. Mind training is not the topic which is confined to modern society. There are diverse theories and practices of mind training in the traditions of the East and the West. But nowadays mind training is newly magnified and becomes a social issue. In this paper, we want to discuss the fundamental purpose and methods of mind training in Confucian tradition. The reason why we focus on Confucian thoughts is that Confucian thoughts emphasizes social relations more than the other thoughts. Therefore, there are abundant social implication in the Confucian tradition of mind training. In the case of Confucian mind training, they emphasize the striving after virtue. It’s the differences with Taoism and Buddhism. The contents of this paper are as follows. First, we will look for the meaning of De(德)in the Confucius(『論語』). Through this, we will explore the relationship between the striving after De(德) and mind training. Second, we will look for the meaning of Dao(道) in the Analects(論語). Through this, we will compare the meaning of Dao(道) in Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. Third, we will explore the relationship between the striving after virtue and mind training in the Analects(論語). Finally, we will explore the post-modern implication of mind training in the Analects(論語).
