사회학자인 필자가 ‘노자의 도 와 마음공부’를 주제로 글을 쓰고자 하는 것은 ‘노자의 도와 마음공부’가 탈현대적인 삶과 문명을 열어가는 데 있어 커다란 가치를 갖고 있다고 생각하기 때문이다. 현대적인 관점에서 보면 현 사회는 이상사회에 근접한 사회이지만, 인류의 불행지수는 과거 어느 때보다 높다. 이것은 현대적인 관점이 더 이상 현실과 부합하지 않음을 의미하고, 그러므로 현대적인 관점을 폐기해야만 함을 의미한다. 지금 인류는 현대화의 기초 위에서 탈현대적인 삶과 문명 건설을 추구해야 한다. 탈현대적인 삶과 문명 건설의 요체가 바로 ‘마음공부’이다. 마음공부란 도와 괴리된 자신의 소외를 자각하고, 참된 자기를 깨어나 활동하게 하기 위해 기울이는 노력이다. 마음공부를 통해 참된 자기를 회복하는 것은 삶의 궁극적인 목적이며, 이것이 바로 탈현대적인 삶의 의미이다. 바로 이런 의미에서 노자의 도와 마음공부는 현재적인 그리고 미래적인 의미를 갖고 있다. 『노자』에는 탈현대적인 의미에서 이상적인 삶의 모습, 현대적인 삶의 소외, 소외 극복의 노력으로서의 마음공부에 대한 논의가 풍부하게 이루어져 있다. 이를 정리해서, 현 인류의 삶을 비판적으로 조명하고, 탈현대적인 삶과 문명의 좌표를 밝히는 것이 본 논문의 목적이다. 본 논문의 서술 내용은 아래와 같다. 첫째, 노자 사상에서 도道의 의미를 밝히고자 했다. 둘째, 도와 합치하는 무위無爲의 삶으로서 이상적인 삶의 의미를 규명하고자 했다. 셋째, 도와 어긋나 있는 현대인의 소외된 삶을 서술하고자 했다. 마지막으로, 도와의 합일을 위한 마음공부를 논의하고자 했다.

Tao and mind training in Lao-tzu has great worth in constructing post-modern life and civilization. That’s why the writer of this article who is sociologist is writing on this topic. In terms of the modern world view, the current society comes close to the utopia. But the current society comes actually close to the dystopia. This means that the modern world view does not fit to the reality anymore. Now the imminent task of the human being is to pursue the post-modern life and civilization based on the modernization. The essence of the construction of the post-modern life and civilization is ‘mind training.’ Mind training means to aware the alienation of myself who is divorced from Tao, and to endeavor to activate the real self. The recovery of the real self through mind training is the fundamental goal of our life, and this is the meaning of the post-modern life. In this sense, Tao and mind training of Lao-tzu has meaning for present and future. In the text Lao-tzu, there are rich implication to figure out the ideal life in the post-modern sense, the alienation of modern life, and mind training as the efforts to recover the modern alienation. The purpose of this paper is to cast light upon the modern life critically and to design the post-modern life and civilization based on the text Lao-tzu. The contents of this paper is as follows. The first is to make clear the meaning of Tao. The second is to show the post-modern ideal life which coincides with Tao. The third is to describe the alienation of modern life which is discordant with Tao. The final is to discuss mind training for the unity with Tao.
