동서양의 생태담론과 실천운동은 심화되는 거대자본중심의 무분별한 경쟁 및 개발이 초래하는 반생태적이고 환경파괴적인 사회구조와 주류 인식에 대한 문제제기에서 출발한다. 따라서 현재 우리 사회가 당면한 생태적 제 문제 해결을 위해서는 새로운 인식으로의 전환과 실천적 전략이 요구된다. 본 연구는 서구에서 기원한 생태담론과 급진적 실천운동의 대표 사례인 글로벌생태 마을네트워크를 근거로 한국의 자생적 생명담론과 한살림선언을 살피고, 특히 종교철학을 매개한 단체를 중심으로 진행되는 다양한 생명운동의 양상을 평가하여 새로운 생활세계 형성의 가능성을 모색한다. 특히 담론 형성과정 및 실천 운동의 확장 가능성에 대한 정치적 함의를 평가하여 문제점을 진단한다. 연구 결과 생태담론과 생명운동은 정치역학적 차원의 이데올로기 형성은 미약하나 변혁을 위해 요구되는 현실적 실천이라는 과정의 중요성을 웅변한 것으로 파악된다.

New ecological concerns and movements are constantly emerging and aim to develop alternative solutions to the greening of society as a rejection of mainstream socio-economic values. The current green concerns and practices of alternative living requires a considerable degree of both ecological awareness and action. Global Ecovillage Network and Life Movement is a typical case that operates on the underlying premise that current society must recognize the urgent need for radical change due to the scale of catastrophic environmental degradation. The functions of ecological concerns and practices, and limitations in the face of wider social change in political terms are explored in this paper. Ecological concerns and practices focus on the transformation of the life-world; however, in the end, they expect this movement to bear a potential for changing the wider society. They are definitely an important basis for thinking about possible future and their endeavour is necessary for the success sought by wider social movements.
