퇴계 이황과 남명 조식은 조선 중기의 인물들인데, 이 시대는 우리나라 유학의 최전성기이다. 이 시대에는 특히 이론적인 리기理氣·심성心性의 학문과 도학道學·절의節義정신을 계승한 실천유학의 정신이 크게 일어났다. 그리고 학자들 간의 학설과 견해 차이로 여러 가지 논쟁이 일어나서 우리나라 유학계의 단조로움과 적막함을 깨뜨린 시대이다. 이들의 학통은 끊이지 않고 이어져 그 학풍과 사상이 후대에 끼친 영향은 지대하다. 고령의 유학도 마찬가지이다. 이 시대는 양적으로나 질적으로 가장 왕성한 시대이다. 고령 지역은 퇴계학과 남명학이 회통하던 지역이다. 이러한 영향으로 퇴계와 남명의 양 문하에서 함께 수학한 학자가 상당수이며, 또한 퇴계와 남명의 학통을 함께 계승한 한강寒岡 정구鄭逑계열의 학자들이 대단히 많다. 퇴계와 남명이 직접 강학講學하던 시기에는 남명 연원의 학맥이 훨씬 우세하였지만, 그렇지만 광해군의 실각과 정인홍鄭仁弘의 실각, 그리고 뒤이은 일련의 정치적 사건으로 인해 남명계가 급속하게 파괴되어 가고 그 자리를 퇴계학파가 대신하게 된다. 우리는 이 논문에서 먼저 고령유학의 더 큰 범주인 영남학파에 대해 고찰하고, 이를 통해 퇴계학과 남명학의 특징을 대비하였다. 그러고 나서 ‘회통성’, ‘개방성’, ‘실천성’ 세 가지 측면을 중심으로 고령유학의 특징을 고찰하였다. 우리는 여기에서 특히 한강 정구를 주목하였는데, 그는 비록 고령 출신은 아니지만 고령유학의 형성에 큰 영향을 끼친 학자이다.

Joseon Dynasty was confucian age. Confucianism was spread extensively over whole country from the beginning of Joseon Dynasty, and formed school according to local specific character in each area. And accordingly, Confucianism culture developed variously in each area. Specially, Joseon Dynasty middle age was best golden age of Korean Confucianism. Confucianism of Goryeong area was same. This age was the most abundant quantitatively, and the most literary level was high age qualitatively. Goryeong area was point of contact detachment which Toegyehak and Nammyeonghak meet. So, there were many confucianists who take teaching from Toegye and name of others at the same time in this area. Goryeong area is point of contact of Kyongsang-bukdo and Kyongsang-namdo geographically, and it is point of contact Toegyehak and Nammyeonghak from thought. There is advantage of point of contact culture in expansive synthesis of various culture. We understood characteristic of confucianism of Goryeong area by three, that is, ‘Synthesis’ ‘Opening’ ‘Practice’ greatly in this paper. Can overcome critical sight about Korean Confucianism if understand confucianism of Goryeong area by this method.
