본 연구의 목적은 제주 해녀 표상이 어떻게 변해왔는지를 살펴보는 데 있다. 그동안 제주 해녀에 대한 연구는 인류학, 민속학, 사회학, 여성학적 관점에서 다양한 연구성과가 축적되어 왔다. 제주 해녀를 유네스코 문화 유산으로 등장하는 과정에서 제주 해녀는 ‘억척스러운 제주 어머니’ 상(像)에서 국가 간 ‘문화전쟁’의 경쟁에서 민족적 자긍심을 지켜줄 존재로까지 인식되고 있다. 본 연구는 기존 연구 성과들을 바탕으로 하되 제주 해녀에 대한 사회적 인식의 변화에 주목하고자 한다. 본 연구는 기존의 연구를 토대로 제주 해녀 표상의 변천 과정을 살펴봄으로써 그동안 여성성의 상징으로서 인식되어 왔던 제주 해녀를 시대의 욕망이 발견한 표상의 집적이라는 점을 밝히고 있다. 식민지 시기 제주 해녀는 ‘인어’의 현현이자 자연의 미인으로, 혹은 제국 일본의 전쟁에 동원된 남성을 응원하는 강인한 여성으로 인식되어 왔다. 또한 근로의 여신으로 혹은 한국적 문화유산의 원형질로서 호명되어 왔다. 이처럼 제주 해녀는 고정된 실체라기보다는 시대적 욕망이 발견한 정치적이고 이념적인 형태로 발견되어 왔다고 할 수 있다. 즉 제주 해녀는 사회적 욕망이 발견한 또 다른 상상의 공동체라고 할 수 있을 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to examine how the symbol of the Jeju haenyeo (female divers) has changed. Until now, the Jeju haenyeo research has accumulated various positive research results from the point of view of anthropology, folklore, sociology, and women’s studies. Through the process of registering the Jeju Haenyeo as a UNESCO Cultural Heritage, the Jeju Haenyeo has changed from a ‘tough Jeju mom’ figure to being recognized as a being protecting the national pride competition of ‘culture war’ between other countries. This research aims to focus on the change of social awareness of the Jeju haenyeo based on existing research results. This study, through the examination of the Jeju haenyeo’s process of transition based on existing research, reveals that the Jeju haenyeo, which was known as a symbol of femininity in the past, is in fact, a collection of symbols discovered by the ambition of the times. In order to break the stereotype of the Jeju haenyeo, they must be perceived as not only fixed entities, but also as creative enthusiasts and dynamic subjects. The discussion of the Jeju haenyeo from a postcolonial point of view is what will be what differentiates this study from previous studies. In other words, this study begins with the perception that the Jeju haenyeo is a product of imagination derived from social desires, then looks into what the Jeju haenyeo is called based on changes in awareness through time.
