This study aimed to examine whether the negative polarity items which had been set forth that they can only be used in negative sentences can actually be used in affirmative sentences. Ten negative polarity items were chosen based on the precedent studies to analyze how negative polarity items appear in corpus according to the type of negative and affirmative sentences.
According to the result, ‘결코, 별로, 아무도, 하나도, 조금도’ appeared in the affirmative sentences at a rate close to 0% to show the typical tendency of negative polarity items while ‘전혀, 도무지, 도저히, 절대로’ often tended to appear in affirmative sentences. The analysis on the form in which ‘전혀, 도무지, 도저히, 절대로’ appear in affirmative sentences which is related to semantic negation as it was mentioned in precedent studies. However, the phenomena where negative polarity items such as ‘전혀, 도무지, 절대로’ appeared in sentences with no semantic relevance to negation is also captured. This study verified that these words cannot be included in the category of negative polarity items as the criteria for judging negatives in syntax.
This study individually analyzed negative polarity items, which had been rolled into and discussed as a single concept, and ultimately distinguished the case where they can be considered as typical negative polarity items that a sentence can be judged as a negative with in terms of syntax and the case where they cannot be regarded as untypical negative polarity items.
