Critics have expressed their contradicting views or different perspectives, considered the contemporary Venetian situations or not considered them, or attempted a variety of new interpretations from a modern point of view when reviewing the plays by Carlo Goldoni since the 18th century. Whatever their different critical perspectives, they have always shown great interest. The resercher investigated these critical perspectives as a whole and then classified and organized them according to the resercher's own method. This process is considered to be helpful not only in understanding the diversity and value of the interpretations that Goldoni's plays have but also in analyzing his plays in a new way. The criticism on the plays by Carlo Goldoni almost always focuses on the 'novelty' of his plays. This novelty can be categorized into the criticisms on the aspects of a reformer and the aspects of a poet. To be more specific, the aspects of a reformer include realistic aspects, moral pursuits(ideological aspects) and theoretical reforms(Commedia dell'Arte), and the contents on the artistry (aesthetic aspects) and vivid language that is actually used(linguistic aspects) correspond to the aspects of a poet. The flow of such criticism was divided into three stages. The first stage is to deal with the tendency to see Carlo Goldoni as a realist, a moralist, an anti-realist and a non-poet in the first half of the 18th-19th century, which is the period of 'extreme confrontation of recognition and denial with respect to Carlo Goldoni as a reformer and poet'. The second stage is to investigate the tendency to see him as a realist and not a poet, not a realist, neither a realist nor a poet, or a poet in the second half of the 19th century and mid-19th century, when there were tendencies to separate a reformer from a poet. The third stage is to examine the tendency to highlight the overall aspects of Goldoni as a realist, a Commedia dell'Arte reformer, a moralist with social and political reform intentions, a vivid language user and an artistic poet from the mid-20th century to the present, when there was an intensified tendency to recognize him as a reformer and poet. Unlike in the past, modern criticisms generally tend to positively extract various characteristics and meanings from Goldoni and his works on the whole with an open attitude. Overall, the main focuses of criticism vary depending on the period, and criticism is favorable, malicious or dispassionate. However, a common fact is that Carlo Goldoni has always been at the center of attention.
