본 연구는 한국사회의 단일민족의식에 대한 개념정리를 통해 다문화사회에서 그 유효성을 살펴 보고 보편적 다문화주의개념에서 단일민족의식이 인종계층화형성에 미치는 요인 및 영향에 대한 검토를 통해 인종계층화형성이 갖고 있는 함의가 무엇인지를 알아보고자 함에 있다. 한국의 단일민족의식은 근대 역사과정 속에서 한민족 사상이나 계급, 지역적 이해관계를 초월하여 민족단결 및 민족정체성을 확립하게도 하였지만 한국사회의 다문화주의사회로의 발전을 방해하는 부정적인 인식의 중심에서 인종계층화형성에 영향을 미치고 있다. 한국이 주창하는 다문화 주의는 다문화주의의 본래 의미를 고려함이 없이 강제동화주의 이데올로기를 다양성이라는 용어를 사용한 한국적 변형으로서 타자가 포용대상이 아니라 관리대상으로서 그리고 수동적인 객체로 전락하게 하면서 인종계층화형성에도 영향을 미쳤다. 본고에서 인종계층화형성에 영향을 미치는 요인과 관련하여 문화적 요인으로 언어, 생활방식, 관습을 사회구조적 요인으로는 인종주의와 법적 제도를 제기하였다. 또한, 서구의 보편적 다문화주의관점에서 단일민족의식이 인종계층화형성이 갖는 함의를 다음과 같이 정리하였다. 첫째, 다문화 한국사회에서 단일민족의식이 여전히 강조되고 있는데 포용적 다문화주의 관점에서 개념 범위의 확대가 필요하다. 둘째는 한국사회는 타민족에 대한 인식을 평등관점에서 출발해야 하고 이들과 관련한 다문화정책들도 포용적인 동화주의관점에서 살펴보아야 한다. 셋째는 한국사회와 외국인 이주민집단 간의 평등적 관계에서 인종주의 및 법률 제도적 정비를 고려하여야 한다.
The purpose of this study is to examine effectiveness of ethnically ho mogeneous nationalism in multicultural society by arranging Korean soc iety's concept of ethnically homogeneous nationalism and investigate impl ications of racial stratification by reviewing factors and effects of ethni cally homogeneous nationalism on racial stratification in the concept of universal multiculturalism. Ethnically homogeneous nationalism of Korea established national unity and ethnic identity beyond the Korean race's thought, class, and local interests in the course of modern history, but has had an effect on racial stratification in the center of negative perceptions that interferes with Korean society's development into multi cultural society. Multiculturalism that Korea advocate does not con sider the original meaning of multiculturalism and is just a Korean version which just used compulsory assimilation transformation as a term called diversity. In Korean multiculturalism, other persons are subject to contr ol, not the persons to embrace. And it had an effect on racial stratific ation as it became an passive object. In the study, the factors which have an effect on racial stratification were raised as follows: Cultural factors are languages, lifestyles, and customs and social structural factors are racism and legal systems. And from the viewpoint of Western multiculturalism, implications of racial stratification of ethnically homog eneous nationalism were summarized as follows: First, ethnically homo geneous nationalism has still been emphasized in multicultural Korean society. The scope of the concept needs to be enlarged from the view point of inclusive multiculturalism. Second, Korean society must start perceptions about other ethnic groups from the viewpoint of equality and multicultural policies related to them must be examined from the viewpoint of inclusive assimilation. Third, institutional reorganization of racism and laws must be considered in the equal relationship between Korean society and immigrant groups.
