The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a language facilitation program using art activities on request and response ability of children with developmental delays.
The subjects were three children with developmental delays attending an inclusive daycare center in G city, whose development ages were more than one year lower than the chronological age in the PRES and K-CDI (Korea-Child Development Inventory).
The participants were given 30 minute of language facilitation program based on art activities intervention twice a week, 30 times in total.
To validate the effects of this study, multiple baseline across subjects was used and performed in the order of baseline, intervention, and maintenance. The event recording was used to record the total incidence of collected data.
The results of the study were as follows:
First, the language facilitation program using art activities positively affected the request of children with developmental delays (information request, behavioral request, and object request).
Second, the language facilitation program using art activities positively affected the responses of children with developmental delays (response to questions, rejection and resistance, repetition and ritual response).
This study is meaningful, in that it applied a systematic program using art activities through various media, sensory stimulations, and body expression aiming at language development of children with developmental delays, who are difficult or unable to converse spontaneously, and are distracted easily and have difficulties in expressing request and response in language.
The result of this study suggests for the future studies that language facilitation by sensory stimulations from various media related to art activities, a play through body expression, a great sense of achievement through self-expression is a valuable program that could be applied on spot of the special education.
