본고는 ‘단어의 문맥적 의미’의 개념과 ‘단어의 문맥적 의미 평가 문항’의 특성을 검토하고 그 교육적 시사점을 제시한 것이다. 자료는 최근 10년간 수능 국어(언어) 영역 문항 중 비문학 읽기 지문에 딸린 단어의 문맥적 의미 평가 문항이다. ‘단어의 문맥적 의미’라는 용어는 그 동안 명확한 개념 규정 없이 ‘단어의 함축적/비유적/관용적/사전적 의미’ 등과 혼효되어 사용되어 왔다. 본고는 ‘단어의 문맥적 의미’라는 용어가 국어과에서 그동안 어떻게 소통되어 왔는지를 관련 용어들과의 비교 검토를 통해 밝히고자 하였다. 단어의 문맥적 의미 평가 문항은 ‘다의어’와 ‘단의’에 초점을 두어 비문학 지문에서 출제되고 단어의 함축적 의미 평가 문항은 ‘이의’에 초점을 두어 문학 지문에서 출제되는 관례가 농후하게 드러났다. 이러한 관점에 따라 비문학 지문에 딸린 단어의 문맥적 의미 평가 문항은 문장 수준에서 단어의 공기 관계 파악만으로도 문맥적 의미 파악이 가능한 쉽고 간단한 문항들로 주로 출제되어 왔다. 본고에서는 비문학 지문에서도 ‘이의’에 초점을 둔 보다 심화된 문항 출제가 가능함을 지적하고 문항 유형을 다양화할 필요가 있음을 지적하였다.

This paper examines the concept of ‘contextual meanings of words’ and ‘the characteristics of those evaluation items’ and suggests educational implications. The data were the contextual meaning evaluation items of words related to non-literary reading fingerprints among the items of the SAT in the last 10 years. The term ‘contextual meaning of the word’ has been used in combination with ‘implicit, metaphorical, idiomatic, lexical meaning’ of words without definite conceptualization. In this paper, we tried to reveal how the term ‘contextual meaning of words’ was communicated in Korean language classes through comparison with related other terms. The contextual meaning evaluation items of the words have focused on ‘polysemy’ and ‘seme’, and the implicit meaning evaluation items of the words have focused on ‘alloseme’. According to this point of view, the contextual meaning evaluation items of the words related to the non-literary fingerprints have been mainly composed of easy and simple questions that can be solved only by grasping the co-occurrence information of sentence. In this paper, I pointed out that it is necessary to diversify question types.
