동아방송(DBS)은 판소리드라마 <흥보전>, <수궁가>, <춘향전>, <심청전>, <적벽가>, <숙영낭자전>, <배비장전>, <옹고집전>, <장끼전>, <변강쇠전> 등을 제작하여 1976년 1월 1일부터 1977년 3월 1일까지 방송했다. 장장 1년 2개월에 걸쳐 무려 10편의 판소리드라마를 방송할 수 있었던 것은, 물론 그만큼 청취자들의 반응이 좋았기 때문이었다. 판소리드라마는 고전 판소리 작품을 현대적인 문화콘텐츠로 재창조하여 성공을 거둔 중요한 사례로서, 고전이 갖는 문화콘텐츠로서의 가치와 가능성에 대한 사회와 학계의 관심이 증대되고 있는 이 시대에 더욱 눈여겨보아야 할 대상이라고 할 수 있다. 선행연구를 통해 판소리드라마의 양식적 특성과 각색 방식이 검토되었지만 개별 작품에 대한 자세한 검토는 아직 이루어지지 않았으므로, 본 연구를 통해 판소리드라마 <배비장전>의 독창적 면모를 심도 있게 고찰하고자 했다. 판소리드라마 <배비장전>은 박동진 창(唱) <배비장타령>을 기초로 제작되었으므로, 본 연구에서는 무엇보다 판소리드라마 <배비장전>과 그 원작에 해당되는 박동진창 <배비장타령>의 비교에 집중했다. 판소리드라마 <배비장전>의 전체줄거리는 원작과 크게 다르지 않지만, 원작에서 풍자의 대상이 되었던 배비장의 ‘위선’이 판소리드라마 <배비장전>에서는 풍자의 대상이 되지 않는다. 왜냐하면 호색(好色)하는 마음을 들킬까 봐 더욱 군자인 양하며 큰소리치는 배비장의 위선이 악의적인 행동으로 간주되기보다는, 성숙하지 못한 행동으로 간주되기 때문이다. 요컨대 판소리드라마 <배비장전>에서 문제가 되는 것은 배비장의 호색 기질이나, 그러한 기질을 숨기고 군자인양하는 위선이 아니라, 배비장의 미성숙이다. 그런 점에서 판소리드라마 <배비장전>은 겉만 어른이고 속은 어린아이인 배비장의 성장 드라마라고 하겠다.

This paper examines the originality of the pansori-drama "Baebijangjeon", which was produced and broadcast by DBS(Dong-A Broadcasting System) in 1976, by comparing it with the original pansori work “Baebijangtaryeong” restored and performed by Park Dong-jin, the master pansori singer of the 20th century. The pansori-drama "Baebijangjeon" has significant value as an object of study because it shows us how the classics can create new cultural contents that are not only enjoyable, but also meaningful to modern audiences. Most of all, this paper focuses on how the pansori-drama "Baebijangjeon" reinterprets the main figure of Baebijang, who has always been notorious for his hypocrisy ever since he first appeared in the history of Korean performing art and literature. In the original pansori work “Baebijangtaryeong”, secondary figures such as Bangja, Aerang, and the governor of Jeju Island snare Baebijang in a conspiracy to expose his hypocrisy. In the pansori-drama "Baebijangjeon", on the other hand, Bangja, Aerang, and the governor of Jeju Island treat Baebijang with favor and help him learn a good lesson from his own mistake, and with such a change the bitter satire on the hypocrisy of an immoral man is replaced by careful consideration for the immaturity of an ordinary man. By changing the secondary figures’ perspectives on the main figure, the pansori-drama "Baebijangjeon" reveals a new perspective on human nature and human life: It regards Baebijang’s pretending to be a moral man not as evil behavior but rather as immature behavior. In this sense, we can say that the pansori-drama "Baebijangjeon" shows a deeper understanding of the human being.
