본 연구는 초기 경전으로 알려진 『숫타니파타(Sutta-nipata)』의 내용을 중심으로 수사학적 관점에서 붓다의 설법 방법과 사례를 분석하였다. 이 경전의 성립 연대에 대해서는 정확하게 알 수는 없으나 불멸후 50년 내외에 결집된 것으로 알려져 있다. 이 경전은 제1 ‘뱀의 품(Uraga-Vagga)’에서부터 제5 ‘피안가는 길의 품(Parayana-Vagga)’에 이르기까지 총 다섯 개의 품에 72개의 작은 경들이 포함되어 있다. 본 연구에서는 강조법, 문답법, 비유법 등 세 가지 수사법의 방식으로 『숫타니파타』의 내용을 분석했다. 이 경전에서 주로 사용한 강조법은 대조와 반복이다. ‘무소의 뿔처럼 혼자서 가라’는 가장 대표적인 결구 반복법의 사례이다. 문답법으로는 일향기, 반힐기, 그리고 자문자답 등의 방법이 주로 사용된 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 비유법은 주로 직유법과 은유법이 사용되었다. 『숫타니파타』의 내용은 이미 오래전에 설법 메시지로 활용된 것이지만 현대사회에서도 유용성을 발휘할 수 있다. 경전 내용을 요약하여 독송하고, 그것을 현대적이고 일상적인 예화와 결합시킨다면, 경전을 활용한 효과적인 설법이 가능하다. 설법의 메시지와 수사법은 경전을 활용하지만 예화는 현재 일어나고 있는 주변의 일상에서 찾는 것이 바람직하다.

This study analyzed the Buddha's methods and practices from a rhetorical point of view, focusing on the contents of 'Sutta-nipata,' known as an early race. The date of the establishment of this canon is not known exactly. Some scholars claim that the temple was made about 50 years after Buddha's death. The scripture contains a total of five Vagga, 72 small spheres, from the first Uraga-Vagga to the fifth Parayana-Vagga. This study analyzed the contents of Sutta-nipata into three types of Rhetoric: Emphasis, Question and answer method, Metaphysics. The highlighting used in this Canon is contrast and repetition. Among the repetition methods, 'Go alone like the horns of a smile' is the most representative example of epistrope. The types of questions and answers are one-sided, anti-answer, and advisory. And the figurative method was mainly used by similes and metaphors. Sutta-nipata is a narrative message that has long been used, but can also be useful in modern society. Using Canon's content, Sermon can be effective if it is recited and combined with modern and everyday examples. The message and Rhetoric of sermon use canon, but it is desirable to find the illustration in everyday life around it.
