중국 역대 고전 시가에서 난을 소재로 한 작품은 매우 많으며 난에 관한 역대 시에 대한 연구 역시 다양한 분야에서 실행되어 왔다. 현재까지 이루어진 난 관련 시가에 대한 그간의 연구를 세부적으로 살펴보면, 난이 지닌 문화적 의미, 특정 시기나 특정 시인의 작품에 나타난 난의 형상, 제화시 속에 나타난 난의 이미지, 梅蘭菊竹의 틀에서 본 난의 특징 등의 분야에서 주로 이루어지고 있는 것으로 정리될 수 있다. 세부적인 특징에 관한 연구가 많은 편이라고 보이며 난에 대한 관심과 애호에 비해 작품에 관한 전반적 분석은 아직도 보완을 필요로 한다고 볼 수 있다. 요컨대 중국 시가에서 난을 소재로 한 작품을 전체적으로 조망하면서 문학적 의미를 정리하는 작업이 필요하다고 여겨진다. 본고는 이 점에 대해 문제의식을 갖고 역대 중국시가에서 난을 언급한 작품을 내용에 따라 구분해보고 각 작품들이 지닌 상징성과 특성을 고찰해보았다. 난은 화려하지도 않고 자신을 잘 드러내지 않지만 단아한 자태를 지닌 식물이다. 강인한 외형이나 화사한 외형을 갖추고 있지 않기에 가까이 하기 전에는 연약한 초본식물이라고 느낄 수도 있지만 문화적 속성을 알게 되면 난이 지닌 고아한 기품과 이미지에 어느덧 매료되게 된다. 孔子와 屈原이 난을 들어 속내를 표현한 것을 필두로 후대 문인들이 난에 담긴미적 감각을 계승해 온 결과 난은 어느 화목보다 다양한 이미지와 상징성을 지닌 식물로 발전해 오게 되었다. 난의 우아하고 섬세한 곡선은 아름다운 감각을 제공하고, 드러내지 않고 본분을 지키는 고아한 인품은 정신적으로 좋은 본보기가 되며, 강인한 절개와 향기는 세인들의 처신에 경종을 울리는 상징성까지 함유하고 있다. 난에 관한 작품을 일차적으로 예거하고 각 작품에 담긴 상징성을 살펴본 본 논문은 난이 지닌 매력과 문학적 의미를 총괄적으로 정리해볼 수 있다는 점에서 의의를 찾아볼 수 있을 것이다.

This article was written to study the various symbols of Orchid in Ancient Chinese poetry. The various symbols of Orchid in Ancient Chinese poetry are summarized as that : The first, the Orchid is the messenger that represent summer, and chaste and pure. Although the Orchid usually grow in deep valley and nearly had no attention, they retain their attribute of chaste and pure. This attribute of Orchid well beloved by all the people and many poets represented the special beauty in their expression. There are many cases where Orchid are sometimes expressed as an object symbolizing someone's ulterior ability or gift.
