본 연구는 이청준의 「벌레 이야기」에 나타난 인물들의 정념 발현 양상을 정념 기호학의 분석틀을 적용하여 살펴보았다. 「벌레 이야기」는 아이를 잃은 엄마(아내)의 참담한 마음을 <분노>라는 정념의 서사로 보여준다. 아내의 분노를 실망감, 불만족, 공격성이라는 세 개의 연속적인 시퀀스로 나누어 살펴본 결과, 아내는 극도의 상실감이 반복되면서 타인과 자신에 대한 신뢰가 무너지고 상처를 치유할 애도의 과정 대신 자기 파괴적인 분노의 정념이 삶을 휘몰아간다. 서사의 흐름은 아내의 분노가 원한과 앙심으로 분할, 확대되어가는 양상을 통해 구축되고 있으며 결국 아내는 분노와 복수라는 공격성으로 인한 파국을 맞게 된다. 이 작품은 인간의 존엄한 가치를 상실한 채 자살한 아내의 서사일 뿐 아니라 아내의 정념이 부정적인 방향성을 갖도록 유도하거나 방치한 주변인들에 대한 비판적 시선을 만들어냄으로써 윤리적 공감과 연민을 촉구하는 또 하나의 잠재된 서사의 축을 포함한다. 관찰자인 남편은 믿을 만하지 못한 서술자임에도 불구하고 서사 전체를 관통하며 계속 의구심을 품고 변모하는 태도를 보여줌으로써 독자로 하여금 이러한 윤리적 시선을 구축하는 데 기여한다. 남편이 아내의 죽음을 희생으로 판단하고 그 죽음의 과정과 이유를 증언하는 과정은 타인에 대한 공감과 연민을 가능하게 하는 조건을 분노의 서사를 통해 형상화하고 있는 작가의 윤리적 실천으로 보인다. 이것은 곧 법, 국가, 종교로 대변되는 절대 권력의 시선으로 미처 파악하지 못한 아내의 인간적 고통과 상처를 보듬고 살피려 했던 이청준만의 감수성이라 할 만하다.

This study is an analysis about the semiotics of passion in Lee Chungjun’s 「Worm Story」, describing the aspect of the characters’ passion revelation. 「Worm Story」 shows the anger of a mother, who lost her loving son, as the narrative of passion. The mother changes sequentially her anger into the disappointment, dissatisfaction and aggression in the story. Having the experience of extreme frustration repeatedly and losing the trust about everything, she drives herself to a self-destructive behavior instead of the mourning or taking care of the sadness. The narrative not only draws her rage to the hatred and grudge but also makes it spread widely and she ends up suiciding herself. This story includes the narrative of a mother who lost the human dignity and it leads the critical view that the mother isn’t destroyed by her own negative passion but the neglect of other people. Her husband, who is a trustless observer at first, has a role which lets the reader construct the ethic view, showing his attitude changed by doubting constantly through the story. Defining the mother’s death as a sacrifice by the ruthless society, the husband enables the reader to have the empathy and compassion to others, and it is the ethic voice of the writer. In this way, Lee Chungjun would like to heal the mother’s agony and wound which the attention of the absolute authority like the law, the nation and the religion couldn’t treat.
