This study aims to examine Sim Hun’s Sangroksu and Kagawa Toyohiko’s Across the Death Line in connection with their influence on Christian Socialism and the zeitgeist centered on it. From December 24, 1909, Kagawa Toyohiko lived a life of devotion for 14 years in a slum with Fukiai Shingawa. The Christian Socialism that Kagawa advocated spoke of a “socialism of love” that emphasized “love of the land,” “love of one’s neighbors,” and “love of God” as the fundamental spirit of rural relief. Kagawa’s autobiographical novel, Across the Death Line(1920), became a bestseller immediately after its publication and was translated into 13 languages. The Korean translation of this novel consists of Across the Death Line (Vol. 1) (translated by Han Inhwan), Across the Death Line (Vol. 2) (translated by Chang Shinduk), and Across the Death Line (Vol. 3) (translated by Chang Shinduk). In the second volume, Nihimi Eiichi, the main protagonist, reveals that he is a Christian Socialist and argues for the necessity of labor unions. Moreover, in the third volume, some elements show how a reconstruction movement was put into motion in the form of enacting policies such as consumer cooperatives, an eight-hour day labor system, and more. Sim Hun’s Sangroksu won the full-length novel contest hosted by Dong-A Daily News in 1935 in commemoration of their 15th year anniversary since their first publication. It depicts the enlightenment movement in rural communities, highlighting the love of Park Donghyuk, who spearheaded the rural volunteer efforts in Hangokri, and Chae Youngshin, who devoted herself to volunteer work in Cheongseokgol. While both Park and Chae believed in “the rural relief work by the colonial policies of the authorities,” a program in the Chosun peasant movement, there were ultimately differences in their ideologies. Chae led “an agricultural promotion program based on Christian evangelical policies,” while Park initiated “a class struggle movement based on socialist realization policies.” Sim combined the disparate ways in which Park relied on Marxism, while Chae relied on God to construct a nation ultimately envisioning a rural collective of a “Christian socialism of love.” Therein lies the difference with Kagawa Toyohiko’s Christian Socialism. It is precisely this collective of “love” that resonates with the “Jesus Town” collective espoused by the likes of Bae Minsu, Choi Moonsik, and Yoo Jaegi, who sought a communal life with peasants and the poor. Put simply, if Kagawa’s work aimed to sublimate to a movement for God’s Kingdom, Sangroksu showcased multi-layered implications to find a union or alliance between Christianity and Marxism.
