시간을 초월한 영원에 대한 갈구는 세상의 모든 존재가 공감하는 문제이다. 한국 서정시의 역사에서는 서정주, 구상과 같은 대표 시인들을 중심으로 영원성의 시학을 구축해 왔다. 본고에서 언급하고자 하는 김남조의 시에도 영원에 대한 관심과 지향의 태도가 나타난다. 특히 아흔을 넘은 나이에도 시 창작을 지속하고 있는 김남조의 근작들에서 이러한 면모를 확인할 수 있다. 이는 70년여간 축적된 그의 시가 추구했던 ‘사랑의 시학’이 최종적으로 지향하는 귀결점이 된다는 점에서 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 존재의 순환 원리는 영속으로 가까워지기 위한 우선적인 조건이 된다. 그리고 이는 자연물의 생명 이미지와 순환 이미지를 통해 형성된다. 가스통 바슐라르가 언급했던 자연물(공기, 물, 불)이 가지는 역동적 이미지들은 시상 전개에 따라 강화의 과정을 거쳐 점차 영속성을 획득하기에 이른다. 결과적으로 이러한 영속의 표상들은 서정적 주체가 지향하는 ‘기쁨’이나 ‘사랑’과 같은 긍정적 정서의 영원성을 지향하게 되는 것이 특징이다. 시간에 대한 철저한 인식과 성찰의 태도는 미래를 연장하게 하는 또 다른 원동력으로 작용한다. 벤야민과 하이데거의 언급들은 과거와 현재에 대한 성찰의 중요성을 역설한다. 과거의 경험은 현재와 맞물리며 미래를 만들어내는데, 이는 궁극적으로 영원성에 근접해 나가게 되는 힘이 된다는 것이다. 다시 말해서 존재에 대한 이해와 성찰이 연이어지면서, 서정적 주체가 지향하는 정신의 영원성에 근접하게 되는 것이다. 김남조의 시세계는 사랑의 시학이라는 큰 테마를 형성해 왔다. 그리고 어느덧 시세계의 마지막을 향해 가고 있다. 미당 서정주가 세상과 시를 함께 떠돌며 영원성의 시학을 지향했다면, 김남조는 끊임없는 존재에 대한 성찰과 탐구의 정신으로 영원성에 다가가기 위해 노력하고 있다. 지치지 않는 시에 대한 열정, 그리고 존재와 세상에 대한 사랑과 포용의 정신은 이러한 영원성의 가치를 더욱 깊이 있게 만들어 준다.

The craving for timeless eternity is a matter of sympathy for all beings in the world. In the history of lyric poetry in Korea, the poetry of eternity has been constructed centering on characters such as Seo Jeong-ju or Gu Sang poet. In the poems of Kim Nam-Jo, which we will refer to in this article, the attitudes of interest and orientation toward eternity appear. Especially, this aspect can be confirmed in the recent works of Kim Nam-jo, which continues to create poetry even after the age of ninety. This is important because it is the ultimate goal of 'poetry of love' pursued by his poetry accumulated over 70 years. The circular principle of existence becomes a prerequisite for getting closer to the enduring. And this is formed through the life image and the circular image of the natural object. The dynamic images of the natural objects (air, water, fire) mentioned by Gaston Bachelard reach to acquire permanence gradually through the strengthening process according to the thesis expansion. As a result, these representations of perpetuation are characterized by a tendency toward the eternity of positive emotions such as 'joy' or 'love' which the lyrical subject is oriented to. A thorough awareness of time and an attitude of introspection serve as another driving force to prolong the future. The references of Benjamin and Heidegger emphasize the importance of reflection on the past and the present. Past experience is in tune with the present and creates the future, which ultimately becomes a force that approaches eternity. In other words, as the understanding and reflection of existence continue, the emotional subject becomes closer to the eternity of spirit. Kim Nam-jo's poetry world has formed a big theme of poetry of love. And now he is heading towards the end of his world. Seo Jeong-ju wandered the world and poetry together and aimed at the poetry of eternity, and Kim Nam-jo is trying to reach eternity with the spirit of reflection and inquiry. His passion for untiring poetry, and the spirit of love and embrace for being and for the world, deepens the value of this eternity.
