이 연구는 문학사상 지속적으로 창작되었던「和歸去來辭」작품 중 노론과 소론의 대립이 극에 달하던 경종 1년(1721년) 당시, 노론 집권층의 핵심인사들이었던 김창집(金昌集), 김창흡(金昌翕), 이이명(李頤命), 이희조(李喜朝), 송상기(宋相琦)가 연작한 다섯 편의 화운시(和韻詩)를 대상으로 한다. 원작인 도연명의「歸去來辭」가 작품 전편에 걸쳐 전원생활의 즐거움을 노래한 것과는 달리 이들의 「和歸去來辭」는 모두 소론과 대립하고 있는 현실정치 상황에 대한 부정적 인식을 드러내는 것에 초점이 맞춰져 있다. 또한 김창집, 김창흡, 송상기의 작품은 원작과 유사하게 은일을 지향하고 있지만 이이명과 이희조의 경우, 원작과는 상반되게 정치에서 물러나서는 안 된다는 것을 역설하고 있다.
결국 원래 출사하지 않았던 김창흡을 제외하고 이 연작에 참여한 나머지 네 명은 끝까지 출사하여 정쟁(政爭)에 가담하였다가 신임옥사에 연루되어 최후를 맞이하게 된다. 즉 이들은「和歸去來辭」연작을 통하여 당면한 공동의 문제에 대해 각자가 생각하는 해결책을 제시하고 서로 수렴한 후 실천한 것이다. 또한 시에서 군주가 원한다면 어떠한 경우라도 반드시 출사해야 한다고 강조함으로써 자신들의 정치 활동의 명분을 부여하고자 하였고 노론 간의 신뢰를 확인함으로써 세력 결집을 유지하려 하였다. 따라서 이 연작들은 도연명의 충신으로서의 이미지를 활용하여 정치적 명분을 확보한 후 권력을 유지하려는 욕망의 표출이라고 보아야 할 것이다. 왜냐하면 권력의 유지가 곧 당파의 정치적 생명뿐만 아니라 가문과 개인의 생물학적 생존을 유지할 수 있는 유일한 방법이었기 때문이다.
This study is to analyze the series of 「Compose a Rhyme in the Come away Home」 by five poets, Kim Chang-jip, Kim Chang-chum, Lee Yi-myung, Lee Hee-jo and Song Sang-ki. They were Noron key members of the ruling elite during the first year of Gyeongjong's reign (1721) when the confrontation between Noron and Soron reached its peak. Unlike Do Yeon-myung’s original work, which sings the joy of rural life throughout the entire work, this work focuses on displaying a negative perception of the real political situation where they were all at odds with Soron. Similarly to the original work, the works by Kim Chang-jip, Kim Chang-chum and Song Sang-ki stress the seclusion from the real world, whereas, in contrast to the original, Lee Yi-myung and Lee Hee-jo argue they should not step down from politics.
In the end, four of them, except for Kim Chang-chum, who did not engage in politics to begin with, eventually participated in political strife until the end of the campaign. In other words, they presented solutions to common problems they were faced with throughout 「和歸去來辭」 series, by converging it among them and putting it into action. And, throughout their series, they justified their political activities by emphasizing that the monarch must serve on any occasion if he wishes, and sought to maintain their unity of power by verifying the trust among the party members. Therefore, the series should be seen as an expression of the desire to use the image of a faithful retainer to secure political cause and retain power. This was because the only way to maintain the biological survival of the family and individuals as well as the political life of the party was by maintaining power.
