주생은 신의를 버리고 욕망을 추구하는 남성주인공으로 이전 전기소설에는 없었던 인물형이라 할 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 주생이라는 인물을 임진왜란에 참전했던 명대 산인(山人)이라는 집단의 특성 속에서 이해했다. 산인은 명대 과거에 낙방한 사인들로 시문으로 생계를 도모하고 명망을 구하기 위해 돌아다는 것을 특징으로 한다. 산인들은 전통적인 사인들과 생존 방식이 달랐기 때문에 많은 비판을 받았다. 과거를 통해 명리를 얻을 수 없었던 이들은 경제적으로 융성한 중국 강남 지역을 근거로 해서 생계를 위해 장사, 사숙교사, 막료, 출판업 등에 종사를 했다. 산인들은 대체로 불안정한 신분 때문에 우울한 인생을 산 경우가 많았다. 주생은 만력 연간에 나타난 강남 지역의 특별한 집단, 산인이라고 불리는 명대 주변부 문인들의 행적과 상당히 흡사한 면이 있다. 그는 소설 속에서 사랑만 한 것처럼 보이지만, 그 당시 과거에 실패한 사인들이 할 수 있는 일을 두루 경험했다. 주생의 사랑과 욕망, 그의 인생의 경험을 개인의 특이한 성격과 이력에서 비롯되었다고 해석하기 어렵다. 그가 그리는 삶의 궤적이 명대 산인들의 그것과 동일하다면 그의 욕망 역시 그들과 상통되는 지점이 있다고 봐야할 것이다. 소설 속에서 드러난 주생의 사랑과 욕망, 실패와 좌절은 명대 산인들의 집단적인 특성 속에서 파악될 때만 온전히 이해될 수 있다.
「Jusaengjun」 is based on an actual event in respect that it is a typical Cheongi novel and the author wrote after directly listening to the story of Jusaeng from Cheondang, who participated in the Japanese Invasion of Korea as one of Ming soldiers. Jusaeng may be a real person or fictitious character created from a Ming soldier which the author met. Personal records on the Ming soldiers have not been found, but Jusaeng’s deeds is quite similar to those of writers who were called Shanren in the Ming Dynasty.
As mentioned in previous studies, Jusaeng is the male main character who breaks faith and drives desires, and is a character type that never appeared in Cheonggi novel. If trying to understand this character from the characteristics of the group called Shanren who participated in the Japanese Invasion of Korea, i.e. outside of the novel, not finding from the development process of novel history, a discussion quite different from what we have observed in the existing studies can be proceeded. If understanding Jusaeng’s failure, frustration, love, and desire from the characteristics of the Shanren under the Ming Dynasty, not narrowing down to a particular personal matter, it could make Jusaeng’s mentality and deeds quite obvious. Therefore in this thesis a discussion was made by linking up living aspects of writes called Shanren appeared in the class change of Ming writers with Jusaengjun.
