이 글은 대구 지역어에서 이중모음의 단모음화에 대한 사회언어학적 분석을 통해 이중모음의 실현 양상을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 대구 지역에서 세대별, 성별 그리고 언어노출에 따른 이중모음의 단모음화 현상에 대한 실현 양상을 파악하고자 한다. 대구 지역에서 50대 이상에서는 단모음화가 생산적이지만 그 이하에서는 비생산적이다. 대구 지역어에서 이중모음의 단모음화 현상은 성별에 따라서는 변별력이 없었다. 언어노출에 따라서 단모음화 현상이 생산적인지 파악한 결과 유의미하다는 값을 얻어낼 수 있었다. 조사 결과를 바탕으로 이중모음의 단모음화 실현 방향을 예측할 수 있었고, 언어 내적인 요인뿐만 아니라 외적인 요인도 영향을 줄 수 있음을 밝혀냈다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the phonological variation of monophthongization of diphthong in the Daegu dialect. Focusing on language- -external factor, the present study investigates how it varies with each age group and gender language exposure. They show different realizations in each syllable. When it is located at the end of the syllable, it is realized as a diphthong. As a result, participants in their 20’s use the more standardized variants than other age groups. This can be seen as a result of increased indirect dialect contact due to an increased exposure to standard Korean. In the age group of 50’s and over, they use the more nonstandard variants than other age groups which is due to the fact that they are less exposed to standard Koreanand more importantly, during their important linguistic formation times, they were relatively more exposed to nonstandard language. With this result, the present study can reveal the direction of the phonology variation in the Daegu dialect.
