이 논문은 바보인물이 주변 사람들과 더불어 살아가는 문제에 중심을 두고, 바보설화에서 바보를 보는 시각과 바보설화에 나타난 공생의 유형과 의미에 대해 탐구하였다. 첫째, 바보를 보는 시각은 세 방향이다. 바보인물은 조금 모자라기는 하지만 순박하고 성실한 인물이어서 조금만 도와주면 잘 지낼 수 있다는 시각과, 바보인물은 어리석기에 그를 속여 이득을 취할 수 있다는 시각, 바보인물을 속여 잇속을 챙긴 사람은 응징해 마땅하다는 시각 등이다. 둘째, 바보인물과의 공생에 대해 살폈다. 여기에서 도출된 네 유형은 보통인물이 바보인물을 돕는 ‘조력형(助力型)’, 보통사람의 잘못이나 착각 등으로 인한 ‘전도형(轉倒型)’, 바보인물의 천진함이 보응을 불러오는 ‘천진형(天眞型)’, 바보인물의 갑작스러운 비약이나 행위의 연쇄에 급전이 일어나는 ‘비약형(飛躍型)’이다. 조력형의 바보인물들은 선량한 인물들로 주변인물들로부터 연민과 동정을 받는다. 전도형은 다수의 주류집단이 소수의 비주류집단에 비해 오히려 못한 모습을 보임으로써 일정 부분 균형과 화해의 지향 가능성을 내비친다. 천진형은 바보이기 때문에 세상일을 제대로 처리할 수 없었고 그 덕에 도리어 보답을 얻어내는 내용이다. 비약형은 누구나 귀하게 될 수 있다는 생각에서 열악한 삶 속에서의 희망이 되기도 하며, 인간이라는 이유만으로 귀하게 여기고 함께 살아나가야 함을 역설한다. 바보이야기에서 이렇게 공생의 길을 모색할 가능성이 열려있다는 점은 사회적 약자와 소통을 통해 함께 잘살아가는 길을 모색하는 데 있어서 의미 있는 일이다.

This paper explores types and meanings of symbiosis demonstrated in fool folktales while focusing on the problem of symbiosis in which fool characters live together with others. First, there are three perspectives to view fools. First, the fool is a little bit foolish, but he is a sincere and simple person, so he can live well with just a little help. Second, the fool is a man who can be tricked and taken advantage of, and third, that person who took advantage of the fool should be punished. Second, I looked at the symbiosis with the fool. The four types derived from this are the “assistive type” where normal people help the fool, the “inverted type” due to the mistake or illusion of normal people, the “innocent type” where the fool's innocence retributes, and the “leap type” in which the situation suddenly changes due to a sudden jump or a chain of actions of the fool. Fool characters of the assistive type possess good personalities, and they receive compassion and sympathy from surrounding characters. The inverted type indicates the orientation of some balance and reconciliation by showing that many mainstream groups are rather inferior to a few minority groups. Within the innocent type, the fool characters ironically get rewarded from not being able to handle works properly. The leap type emphasizes that, considering that anyone can become valuable and can become a hope in a poor life, we should regard each other valuable just because we are humans and live out well together. The point that there exist such possibilities to seek ways of symbiosis in fool folktales is meaningful for finding a way to seek ways of living well together by communicating with the social weak.
