<화문록>은 애정욕을 추구하는 여성을 부정적으로 그리지 않았다는 점이 특이하다. 애욕을 추구하면서도 정절을 중시하는 호홍매의 모습이 근대적 형상으로 주목받아 왔다. 그러나 이러한 특징은 작품 전체적 성격을 고려하여 평가되어야 한다. 이에 본고는 여성인물 형상화의 차별적 구도를 분석함으로써 이 작품이 지향하는 바를 살피고 이를 통해 애욕 긍정에 대해서도 새롭게 고찰하고자 했다. 그 결과 선행연구에서 소설사 말기작으로 분류한 것과는 다른 관점에서 이 소설을 재평가할 필요성을 확인하였다. 이 작품은 유교적 가부장제에 입각한 가문의 안정화를 도모하며 이를 위해 여성인물을 차별적으로 형상화하고 있다. 그러나 제 역할을 수행하지 못하는 가장이나 미숙한 가문의식으로 미루어 가문소설 초기의 모습에 가깝다고 보인다. 그 점에서 이 작품의 후대적 징표라고 논의되어 온 애욕에 대한 긍정도 집단주의가 개인주의로 변모하는 후기의 모습이 아니라 가문을 중심으로 예교를 강조하며 무분별한 애정 추구를 경계하는 가문소설 형성기의 모습일 수 있다. 이러한 점을 고려하면 소설사 말기의 사회상을 반영한 것이라고 평가했던 이 작품의 성격과 소설사적 위상을 재고해보아야 한다.

Therefore, this paper analyzed the discriminatory composition of embodiment about female characters, and tried to examine the point of this work and also it was intended to be reexamined about the affirmation of affection through this. Through women who are differentiated according to their roles that are appropriate for their respective positions, It is found that the novel is aimed at stabilizing the family based on Confucian patriarchy. But the heads of the family, who should be the center of the family, are not able to perform their roles, which is close to the early days of the family novel. Partial affirmation of affection may be the appearance of a family novel that emphasizes the ethical code centered on the family, rather than the latter part of the transformation of collectiveism into individualism, and warns of indiscriminate pursuit of affection. Considering this point, It is necessary to reconsider the historical status of this novel, which was evaluated as reflecting the social image of the end of the novel history.
