이 글은 『토지』의 문화적 요소 중 하나인 ‘의복’에 주목하여 그 의미를 밝히는 데 목적이 있다. 『토지』는 조선-대한제국-일제 강점기를 거쳐 해방에 이르기까지 격동기 한국을 살았던 사람들의 모습을 그리고 있어 당시 문화적 요소가 고스란히 담겨있다. 특히 등장인물들의 옷차림은 그들이 서울, 일본, 만주, 러시아 등으로 이동을 하면서 매우 다양하게 제시된다. 이는 『토지』가 가진 시간적, 공간적 배경과 매우 밀접한 연관이 있다. 그리고 이에 더해 ‘의복’에 대한 작가의 관심이 우선적으로 작용한다. 『토지』는 다른 작가의 소설에서 찾을 수 없는 ‘의복’의 의미를 담고 있다. 비슷한 창작시기나 비슷한 배경을 지닌 소설에서도 인물의 의복 표현은 나타나지만 『토지』에서처럼 한 인물에 대한 지속적인 의복 표현이 나타나는 작품은 찾기 어렵다. 이는 『토지』가 가진 문학적 특징으로 생각된다. 『토지』에는 700여 명의 인물이 등장하고 이들은 각각의 의복 표현을 통해 자신의 정체성을 드러내고 있지만, 이 글에서는 그 인물들 중 여섯 인물에 대해 분석하고 그 의미를 밝힌다. 먼저 윤씨 부인은 흰 옷을 통해 민중적 동질성을 보여준다. 이를 통해 윤씨 부인이 인식했던 봉건적 신분제도의 붕괴를 파악할 수 있다. 이에 반해 최서희는 화려한 옷차림으로 최 참판댁의 복원을 통한 봉건사회로의 회귀를 나타낸다. 임명희와 강선혜는 옷차림을 통해 신여성으로서의 자기 정체성을 보여준다. 이를 통해 당시 초기 신여성들이 처해있던 현실을 파악할 수 있다. 김두수와 유인실은 식민지 시대 밀정과 독립운동가로 등장하여 그들의 활동을 위한 위장적 옷차림을 보여준다. 살펴본 인물들의 옷차림은 조선 - 대한제국 - 일제 강점기의 성격을 나타내고 있다. 이들이 드러내는 봉건성, 근대성, 식민성은 격동기 한국 사회를 드러내 보여준다. 『토지』의 인물들은 옷차림을 통해 개인의 상황과 처한 현실, 생각 등을 나타낼 뿐만 아니라 이를 통해 한국 사회의 변모 과정도 파악할 수 있게 한다.

This study focuses on 'clothing' which is one of the cultural elements of Toji and aims to reveal its meaning. Toji refers to the people who lived in the turbulent period of Korea from the Joseon Dynasty, the Korean Empire, to the Liberation through the Japanese colonial period, and the novel contains the entire cultural elements at the time. Particularly, the distinctive clothing attire of the characters is presented in a variety of ways as they move to Seoul, Japan, Manchuria, and Russia. This is closely related to the temporal and spatial background of Toji. In addition, the interest of Toji writer on 'clothes' is a priority. Toji contains various meanings of 'clothes' that can not be found in other novels. Even in novels with similar backgrounds and times, the expression of one character’s clothing describes, but it is hard to find a single work in which the various expression of the continuous clothes are expressed for each character as in Toji. This is thought to be a literary feature of Toji. In Toji, about 700 characters appear, and they reveal their identity through the expression of their clothes. In this article, the meaning of clothes is analyzed and revealed mainly in the clothing of six characters. First, Mrs. Yoon shows the people's homogeneity through white clothes. Through this white clothes, it is possible to grasp the collapse of the feudal status system that Mrs. Yoon recognized. On the other hand, Choi Seo-Hee shows a return to the feudal society through restoration of ‘Choi’s Family’. Im Myung-Hee and Kang Seon-Hye show their identity as a new generation woman (‘modern girl’) through clothing. Through the expression analysis of these clothes, we can grasp the social reality of the new generation women at that time. Kim Doo-Su and Yoo In-Sil appeared as colonial emigrants and independence activists and showed camouflage attire for their activities. The attire of the characters shown in the study shows the character of Joseon - Korean Empire - Japanese colonial period. Their feudalism, modernity, and colonialism reveal the turbulent Korean society. The characters of Toji not only show the individual situation, reality, and thoughts through clothing, but also enable them to understand the process of transformation of Korean society.
