17세기의 스페인이 위기의 시대였듯이, 20세기 스페인 역시 위기와 변화의 시기였다고 할 수 있다. 1975년 프랑코 사후 스페인은 급격한 민주화전환기로 다양한 정치적 이데올로기가 충돌하고, 독재의 억압으로부터 해방된 스페인 사회는 자유를 넘어 방종으로 흐르기까지 한다. 1980년대는 새로운 세계가 도래할 것이라는 기대감으로 들떠있었던 동시에 36년간 군림했던 프랑코의 그림자가 프랑코가 사망한 이후에도 여전히 스페인 사회에 드리워져 스페인사람들의 정신세계를 지배하고 있었다. 급격하게 변화된 사회 속에서 물질주의와 전통 가톨릭 보수주의 정치의 부재로 인한 혼란, 새로운 민주사회에 대한 기대감 등 사회는 극도로 혼란스러운 상태에 빠지게 되면서 스페인 사람들은 또다시 바로크적 현실에 놓이게 된다. 그러나 아이러니하게도 17세기의 시대적 상황은 문화·예술 분야에서 훌륭한 자양분이 되면서 예술의 황금세기를 구가하였듯이, 20세기 위기의 시대를 맞이한 스페인에서도 20세기 초 아방가르드에 지대한 영향을 미쳤던 바로크 미학이 잠시 주춤했던 프랑코 시대를 거쳐 프랑코 사후 다시 부활하여 스페인 현대소설에서도 그 자취를 보인다. 지금까지 스페인 현대소설은 포스트모더니즘적 시각으로만 분석되어져 왔고, 스페인이 바로크의 종주국이었음에도 불구하고 현대문학에서 전혀 다루어지고 있지 않았다. 혼돈 속의 위기의식, 중심의 부재, 환멸이라는 17세기 바로크적 현실이 20세기 스페인에서도 적용될 수 있음을 전제할 때, 스페인 현대소설에서도 바로크 미학이 숨겨져 있을 수 있다고 본다. 따라서 스페인의 대표적인 포스트모더니즘 소설인 『리스본의 겨울』을 바로크적 시각에서 살펴보고 이소설 속에 잠재되어 있는 바로크 미학의 징후들을 포착함으로서 새로운 시각으로 무뇨스몰리나 소설에 대한 연구지평을 넓혀보고자 한다.

Just as Spain in the 17th century was a period of crisis, Spain in the 20th century was also a period of crisis and change. After Franco's death in 1975, various political ideologies clashed with the rapid transition to democracy and Spanish society, which was liberated from oppression of dictatorship, went from beyond freedom to strict self-indulgence. In the 1980s, Spanish people were excited about the emergence of a new world but Franco's shadow, which ruled for 36 years, dominated the spiritual world of Spanish society even after his death. In a rapidly changing society, things such as the materialism, the confusion caused by the absence of the orthodox politics of traditional Catholic conservatism, the expectation of a new democratic society, create an extremely confused society and the Spanish people are once again in the baroque reality. Ironically, as in the cultural and artistic aspects of the 17th century, the Baroque aesthetics, which had a profound influence on the avant-garde in the early 20th century after the Franco's dictatorship when Baroque aesthetics were paused for a moment, was resurrected after Franco's death and it is also shown in the Spanish contemporary novels. Until now, Spanish contemporary novels have been analyzed only from a postmodernist perspective, and despite the fact that Spain was the successor to the Baroque, it has never been dealt within Spanish contemporary literature at all. But Baroque aesthetics may be hidden in Spanish contemporary novels. Providing that the Baroque reality of the 17th century, like a crisis of consciousness, a central absence and a disillusion in chaos, can be applied in Spain in the 20th century. Therefore, by looking at the Spanish postmodernist novel Winter in Lisbon from the Baroque perspective and capturing the signs of Baroque aesthetics in the novel, I would like to broaden the horizon of research on the novels of Munoz Molina with a new perspective.
