이창동 감독의 영화 《버닝》은 전통적인 인과관계를 기반으로 한 서사가 아닌, 묘사와 형상에 대한 지각과 사유 자체를 추구하는 작품이다. 이 작품에서 관객들은 영화에서 일어나는 사건들을 각자의 방식으로 볼 수 있으며, 영화는 플롯보다는 사유의 과정 그 자체를 전면에 내세우고 있다. 에이젠슈테인 식으로 정의하자면, 《버닝》은 “분절되고 재구성되고, 낯설게 펼쳐진 형식 안에서 새로운 의미를 스스로 찾아가는” 영화이다. 이런 점에서 이 작품의 전반적인 형식은 에이젠슈테인이 자신의 몽타주 이론에서 제시했던 주요 개념들로 분석할 수 있었다. 본고에서 필자는 영화 《버닝》이 이러한 은유, 특히 동사적 은유의 연쇄로 이루어져 있으며, 그러한 은유가 관객에게 불러일으키는 연상 작용으로 인해 더욱 풍부한 예술텍스트가 된 것으로 보고, 이에 대해서 논증하였다. 필자는 이 작품이 통상적인 인과관계에 의한 서사 전개를 거부하고 형상과 은유로 연속되는 형식을 추구하는 작품이라는 관점에서도 논지를 전개하였다. 구체적으로 에이젠슈테인의 몽타주 이론에서 언급되는 은유의 개념, 특히 “은유의 동사성”이라는 개념을 사용해서 작품을 분석하였다. 이후 에이젠슈테인의 이러한 은유의 개념과 연관된 다른 개념들을 사용해서 좀 더 상세하게 영화 《버닝》을 분석하였다.

Lee Chang-dong's film "Burning" is not a narrative based on traditional causal relationships, but rather a pursuit of perceptions and thoughts about depictions and forms. In this work, the audience can see the events taking place in the movie in their own way, and the film shows the process of thinking rather than the plot itself. In terms of the Einstein formula, "Burning" is a film that "seeks new meanings in a form that is segmented, reconstructed, and unfolded". In this sense, the overall form of this work could be analyzed by Eigenstein as a major concept presented in his montage theory. In this paper, I have argued that the film "Burning" consists of a series of these metaphors, especially synonyms metaphor, and that the metaphor has become a richer artistic text due to the associations evoking the audience. I have also argued that this work is a work that rejects the development of narrative by causal relationship and pursues a continuous form with form and metaphor. Specifically, I analyzed the concept of the metaphor mentioned in Eisenstein's montage theory, in particular, the concept of "verb nature of metaphor". I then analyzed the film "Burning" in more detail using other concepts associated with the concept of this metaphor of Eigenstein.
