The purpose of this study is to investigate the usage of refined Korean words and whether they are well received in Korean language. The relative ratio of the usage of refined words and loan words was analyzed in the corpus of newspaper articles. The results of analysis showed that (1) fewer than 10 percent of the refined Korean words were used more than the loan words. The refined Korean words of ‘reference’, ‘reply’, ‘over pace’, and ‘must have’ were frequently used. (2) However, most of the refined words were less frequently used than the loan words. The first reason was that refined words did not express meaning well. For example, the refined word of ‘well-being’ is not immediately associated with its meaning and the refined word of ‘costume play’ distorts the original meaning. The second reason was that the form of the refined words was not simple. For example, the refined words of 'car seat' and 'trauma' were found to be less frequently used due to their large number of syllables and their complex form. (3) If a single loan word had several refined words, there were differences in the frequency of usage of the refined words. (4) And if the abbreviation was also used as an acronym, the abbreviation was used more than the original loan word or its refined word. These results suggest that refined words that are easy to understand and simple should be chosen. That would make the refinement more effective and could lead to more usage of the refined words.
