The aim of this paper was to analyze speaking style-dependent prosodic variation in Jeju Korean. To achieve this, the data collected from Jeju speakers in their 70s were analyzed in terms of prosodic features according to speech style. In this paper, speech style is divided into two - read speech and dialogue.
The results are as follows; When we analyzed the type of boundary tones in predicate ending and interrogative ending, it was confirmed that more types of boundary tones in dialogue are used than in read speech. In predicate ending, HL% appeared at a high rate in dialogue and L% was found to be similar to HL% in read speech. In interrogative ending, LH% was higher than H% in dialogue and H% was found to be similar to LH% in read speech. Speech rate was quantified as speaking rate and articulation rate, both represented as the number of syllables per second. Both speaking rate and articulation rate are significantly faster in dialogue than read speech. Also, we found that the F0 range in dialogue is wider than in read speech.
In previous studies of prosodic features in Jeju dialect, it has been studied only boundary tones each speech style. On the other hand, the current study is significant in that it investigated prosodic features in Jeju dialect throughout read speech and dialogue using various prosodic features.
