본고는 고전소설에 나타난 지하국 대적의 유형을 분류하고, 기능 및 의미를 다각도에서 고찰하였다. 연구 대상으로 지하국 대적 퇴치담이 등장하는 열다섯 작품을 선정하였다. 지하국 대적은 크게 돼지형, 원숭이형, 수중생물형, 반인반수형으로 분류되며, 각 유형별로 특징적인 양상을 갖는다. 또한 다양한 변이 형태를 발견할 수 있다. 지하국 대적의 기능과 의미는 네 가지로 도출된다. 첫째, 퇴치자의 영웅성 및 특별한 능력을 발현시킨다. 둘째, 소설 향유층에게 흥미를 유발하는 요소로써 작용한다. 셋째, 퇴치 방식에 따라 소설 향유층의 요괴관을 표출한다. 넷째, 남성들에게 내재한 공포 심리 및 경계심을 드러낸다. 본 논의를 통해 지하국 대적의 유형을 체계적으로 분류하고, 변이 양상을 살필 수 있었다. 더불어 지하국 대적이 후대 작품에 이르기까지 끊임없이 활용되었던 원동력에 대해서도 구명할 수 있었다.

This study classified the types of the Underground Monster in classic novels and examined its functions and meanings from various angles. The study subjects are 15 works with a story of the elimination of the Underground Monster. The Underground Monster is largely classified as types of pig, monkey, aquatic life, or half-human, and each type has its own characteristic features. Furthermore, it is possible to find various types of mutations. The Underground Monster has four features and meanings. First, it expresses the heroism and special ability of the eliminator. Second, it acts as an interesting element for novel readers. Third, it expresses the monster's view of the novel readers according to the method of elimination. Fourth, it reveals the fears and wariness inherent in men. Through this discussion, this study was able to systematically categorize the types of Underground Monster and examine its mutation patterns. Furthermore, the Underground Monster was able to find out about the impetus that was constantly used to later works.
