상담 서비스를 이용하기로 결정하는 과정은 여러 가지 요인들이 작용하는 복잡한 과정이며, 다수의 연구들에서는 상담 서비스 의사결정에 이성적이고 합리적인 경로가 가장 큰 영향을 미친다고 생각해왔다. 하지만 이중처리이론에서는 이에 대해 의문을 제기하며 이성적인 경로 뿐 아니라 사회반응적이고 휴리스틱적인 경로의 영향이 존재함을 주장하였다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 이중처리이론의 하나인 원형-의향 모형(Prototype Willingness Model)을 활용하여, 상담 서비스 의사 결정 과정에 이성적인 경로와 휴리스틱적인 경로가 각각 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 이전 상담경험이 없는 대학생과 대학원생 226명을 대상으로 설문을 진행하고, 수집한 데이터에 대해 구조방정식 모형(SEM) 검증을 실시하였다. 그 결과, 상담 서비스 이용 결정에 있어 의도로 대표되는 이성적인 경로보다 의향으로 대표되는 휴리스틱적인 경로가 더 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 이전 이성적인 경로만을 고려해왔던 전문적 도움추구 영역에 휴리스틱적인 경로에 대한 연구의 필요성을 제안하며, 상담을 홍보하는 효과적인 방향에 대해서도 제안점을 제시하였다.

A large body of prior research in professional help-seeking has been established on the assumption that the decision to seek help is made through intentional and rational processes. Dual-process theory has challenged this idea, suggesting that not only the rational process(the rational pathway) but also the heuristic process(the social reaction pathway) affects the decision making process. This study focuses on understanding how two different information-processing pathways influence the help-seeking decisions by using Prototype Willingness model. Online questionnaire data was collected from 226 university students in Korea, and structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test the model. The results indicated that the heuristic pathway predicted the help-seeking behavior better than the rational pathway. These findings highlight the need for future research on the heuristic pathway in the area of professional help-seeking, where only the rational pathway was considered. An effective way of publicizing counseling service was suggested as well.
