본고는 오상원이 그의 소설들에서 드러내는 허무주의적 현실인식의 양상을 고찰한 것이다. 1945년 일제로부터의 해방 이후 혼란한 정국을 극복할 겨를도 없이 맞은 6.25 전쟁은 수많은 사람들을 죽음으로 몰았으며, 살아남은 사람들도 전쟁의 상처로 정상적인 삶을 영위할 수 없었다. 이러한 시대 상황에서 등장한 1950년대 신세대 작가 중 한 사람인 오상원은 전쟁이라는 극한 상황 속에서의 인간의 삶에 대한 의의와 존재의 근원에 대한 물음을 그의 소설을 통하여 제기하였다. 본고는 실존주의 작가로 평가받는 오상원 소설의 기저에 허무주의 경향이 강하게 내재하고 있다는 시각에서 이루어졌다. 그런데 오상원의 소설에 나타난 허무주의는 많은 평자들에 의해 부정적 시각으로 평가되거나 극복해야 할 삶의 태도로 여겨졌다. 그러나 필자는 허무주의를 오상원이 해방기의 혼란과 전쟁, 그리고 전후(戰後)의 불안을 체험하면서 갖게 된 현실인식의 한 중요한 경향으로 보았다. 따라서 본고에서는 허무주의를 부정적 시각에서 논의하거나 극복되어야 할 삶의 태도로 평가하는 것은 바람직하지 않다고 보고, 오상원의 소설 속에 내재한 허무적 삶의 태도를 핵심적 논의 대상으로 삼아, 작품들 속에서 허무주의의 발현 양상을 살피고 그것이 지니는 의의를 논의하고자 하였다.

This study is to look into the nihilistic cognition of reality revealed in Oh Sangwon’s novels. After gaining independence from Japan in 1945, with no time to overcome the chaotic state of the nation, Korea had to go through Korean War, which left many wounded and dead. And the people survived the war could not live a normal life with scars from the war. As the one of the 1950s’ new generation authors, the author Oh Sangwon made efforts to raise some questions and tried to find the answers about human beings by embodying the life that human beings undergo in an extreme circumstance like war. This study was established with the view that Oh Sangwon's novels were based on nihilism. Critics have evaluated the nihilism in Oh Sangwon’s novels negatively or considered it as an attitude toward life that needs to be overcome. But I recognized the nihilism as a tendency toward the cognition of reality, which Oh Sangwon came to acquire while undergoing the chaos and anxiety after Korean War. Therefore in this paper, with the point of view that it is not proper to criticize nihilism from a negative viewpoint or to consider it as an attitude toward life that needs to be overcome, I treated the nihilism in Oh Sangwon’s novel as a main theme. I studied aspects of nihilism in Oh Sangwon's novels and considered the meaning of the nihilistic cognition of reality.
