이 글은 <계축일기>에 나타난 서사 공간을 분석함으로써, 작품의 주체를 인목대비로 보는 시각에서 벗어나 새로운 공간 주체로서 ‘나인’들에 주목하고자 하였다. <계축일기>의 공간 구도는 ‘대비전’과 ‘대전’, 그리고 이 둘 사이를 가르는 ‘담장’과 ‘문’으로 나눌 수 있으며, 이 공간들은 작중 상황에 따라 그 의미가 수시로 변화하였다. 우선 인목대비가 대비전 내의 공간 장악력을 상실하는 상황을 통해 그의 실권(失權)이 표면화되며, 반대로 대전의 권위와 그로 인한 위협은 점차 커지게 된다. 여기서 대전의 권력을 대변하는 인물들은 대전 소속의 나인들이며, 이들은 끊임없이 음모를 꾸며 대비전의 경계를 허물고 무너뜨리려 한다. 이미 대비전은 폐쇄된 공간이지만, 대비전을 음해하려는 대전 나인들에게 있어서는 그 경계가 무의미해지는 것이다. 한편 대비전 나인들은 이에 맞서는 모습을 보이고, 대비전을 둘러싼 ‘담장’과 ‘문’의 경계는 끊임없이 허물어지고 또 구축되기를 반복한다. 담장과 문을 중심으로 대비전 나인들과 대전 나인들 간의 대립 구도가 형성되는 것이다. 이러한 상황 하에서 대비전의 새로운 공간 주체로서 나인들이 등장한다. 이들은 인목대비와의 동지의식을 바탕으로 나름의 자의식과 주체성을 발휘하는데, 이는 <계축일기>에 대한 또 다른 해석의 여지가 있음을 보여주는 단서라 할 수 있다. 그간 <계축일기>는 인목대비와 광해군이라는 두 인물을 중심으로 읽혀졌지만, 그 사이에서 수많은 나인들이 이들을 대변하고 있는 것이다. 또 이것이 무조건적인 충성이 아닌 각자의 이해관계나 동지의식에서 나온 행동이라는 점에서, 그간 나인들을 주종 관계의 객체로 보는 사고방식에 균열이 일어나고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 즉 <계축일기>는 표면적으로는 인목대비와 광해군의 정치대결을 그려내고 있지만, 한편으로는 이름 없는 나인들을 개개의 주체로 드러내는 이중적 면모를 지닌 작품이라 할 수 있을 것이다.

By analyzing the space of narrative revealed in Gyechugilgi, this article deviates from the point of view of the subject of the work as Inmokdaebi and tried to pay attention to ‘court ladies’ as a new space subject. The spatial composition of the Diary diary can be divided into two parts: ‘Daebijeon’, ‘Daejeon’, and the ‘Fence’ and ‘Door’ that divide the two. First of all, the declining power of Inmokdaebi has been turned into a situation of losing the power of space, and thus the authority of the Daejeon and its threats are getting bigger. However, in Gyechugilgi, Daejeon does not refer to just one person of Gwanghaegun. The characters that make Daejeon look like the ones are court ladies of Daejeon, who constantly intrigue and try to destroy the Daebijeon. As a result, Daebijeon is a trapped space, but the boundaries are constantly broken and constructed. The contrast between court ladies of Daejeon and court ladies of Daebijeon is formed around this boundary. Under these circumstances, court ladies are emerging as a new space subject before Daebijeon, and they demonstrate their own self-consciousness and subjectivity based on the consciousness of Inmokdaebi. This is a clue to show that there is possibility for another interpretation of Gyechugilgi. In the meantime, the Gyechugilgi has been read mainly on the two figures of Inmokdaebi and Gwanghaegun, but many court ladies are representing them. But on the other hand, it is a work with a double aspect that reveals the nameless ones as individual subjects.
