이 글은 근대지 형성 과정에서 등장한 『서유견문』과 『세계일람』의 계몽 담론과 문체상의 변화 양상을 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. 이 두 텍스트는 근대 계몽기 전형적인 견문 텍스트이자 계몽서로 볼 수 있다. 다만 『서유견문』이 유길준의 서유 체험과 서적 등을 종합하여 저술한 것이라면, 『세계일람』은 김하정의 역술(譯述) 작품이어서 직접 체험 기록을 찾기는 어렵다. 그럼에도 두 작품은 15년 정도의 시차가 존재한다는 점에서 어휘나 문장 사용 방식, 문체 면에서의 차이를 보인다. 그 가운데 대표적인 것은 『서유견문』에 등장하는 견문 담론이 계몽을 목표로 한 설명과 논증에 치중했다면, 『세계일람』은 독자의 흥미를 고려한 도시 문화 소개에 집중하며 주관적 가치 평가가 강조된다는 점이다. 문체 면에서는 문장의 길이가 짧아지고 설명이 구체화되며, 현지음을 반영한 어휘 표기가 늘어난다는 점에서 비교적 큰 차이를 보인다. 이러한 변화는 근대 계몽기 견문 담론이 계몽성에서 점차 대중의 취미에 부합하는 독서물로 변화하는 과정으로 해석할 수 있다. 이 점에서 『세계일람』은 『소년』, 『청춘』 등에 소재한 본격적인 언문일치체 기행문으로 발전해 가는 과도기의 독서물이라고 할 수 있다.

The purpose of this article is to examine Enlightenment discourse and stylistic changes in the Seoyugyeonmun and the Seogyeoilram that emerged in the process of modern knowledge formation. These two texts are typical of the Enlightenment and can be seen as Enlightenment. However, if Yu Gil-joon’s work is a synthesis of Western experience and books, it is difficult to find the experience recorded directly since Kim Ha-jung translated and arranged his works. The two works, separated by about 15 years, show differences of vocabulary, sentence usage, and style. One representative example is that the argumentative discourse of the Seoyugyeonmun focuses on explanations of and arguments about the Enlightenment, whereas the Seogyeoilram focuses on introducing urban culture out of consideration for the interests of the reader. In terms of style,the lengths of the sentences are shorter, explanations are specified, and there is an increase in the vocabulary reflective of the topic under discussion. This change can be interpreted as a process in which Enlightenment discourse transitions to a discourse meant more for the general reading public.
