본 연구는 윤금초 시조에 나타난 생태언어학적 특성과 방언의 시어(詩語)적 가치를 살펴보고자 하였다. 우선, 생태언어학적 관점에서 언어가 인간과 사회 속에서 어떠한 상관관계에 놓여 있는지를 분석하고, 그 관계망 속에서 드러나는 언어의 생태양상을 탐구하였다. 인간과 사회란 문화적 환경을 아우르는 말이며, 언어를 둘러싸고 있는 지역과 국가, 소수민족 등이 이에 포함된다. 생태언어학은 언어의 다양성을 바탕으로 언어의 권리와 역할을 강조하는 생태학의 한 분과 학문인 것이다. 생태주의자들이 생태를 보호하려고 노력하듯이 생태언어학에서는 소멸하여가는 언어를 보호하기 위해 애쓴다. 여기에는 방언도 포함된다. 방언이야말로 언어공동체의 다양성을 보여주는 중요한 언어지표이며 그 나라의 언어유산이다. 방언의 소멸과 쇠퇴는 나라 언어의 쇠퇴를 초래하고, 이는 곧 민족의 정체성 상실로 이어진다. 그런 만큼 방언의 존속과 보존은 반드시 필요한 일이다. 언어공동체 내에서 조화와 균형, 평화로운 공존을 위하여 방언의 다양성은 인정받아야 할 것이다. 전남 해남 태생의 윤금초 시인은 전남 방언을 통해 지방 정서의 시적 형상화에 특징을 드러낸 시인이다. 그는 구어체 전남 방언을 다채롭게 구사하여 그 지역에서 삶의 터전을 일군 토박이들의 사상과 생활 방식을 보여주고 있다. 전통 장르인 시조에 전남 방언과 지방색을 반영하여, 그 지역에 육화된 풍습, 지역민의 군상을 형상화하고 실감나는 현장성을 표현하는 데 주력한 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 사설시조창작에 전남 방언을 적극적으로 활용함으로써 인간사의 부정적인 면모를 비판·풍자하여 시조의 지평을 확장하였다. 본고는 이러한 윤금초의 시조에 나타난 생태언어학적 성과와 방언 미학의 특성을 구체적으로 고찰하였다.

Ecological linguistics is to analyze the correlation between language and human within society and to study ecology of languages within this correlational network. Human and society refer to cultural environment, and it includes regions, countries, and the associated languages of minority groups. With the global perspective, ecological linguistics is a branch study of linguistics and ecology to accentuate rights and roles of languages and to emphasize the diversity of languages. As ecologists put effort to protect the ecosystem, ecological linguistics is to protect languages that are facing extinction, and a dialect is also one of disappearing languages. Dialects are the key indicators to show the diversity of speech communities, and dialects are genealogies of the country. Extinction and deterioration of dialects weaken languages of one country and eliminate identity of races. Within speech communities, the diversity of dialects shall be acknowledged for peaceful coexistence, harmony, and balance. Hence, this study is to determine the values of dialects and the characteristics of ecological linguistics shown from the traditional three-stanza Korean poem by Yun Geum-cho. He had a colorful command of colloquial Jeonnam dialect, depicting the ideas and lifestyles of natives that built a life base in the area. Reflecting the dialect and local colors of Jeonnam in the traditional genre of Sijo, he focused on the embodiment of the customs incarnated in the area and the groups of local residents and the expression of real present sense. In addition, he broadened the horizon of Sijo by making active use of the Jeonnam dialect in the creation of Saseol Sijo and criticizing and satirizing the negative aspects of human affairs. Likewise, the traditional three-stanza Korean poem by Yun Geum-cho shows the diversity of speech communities from the perspective of ecological linguistics and establishes a solid foothold of languages and literature of Korea.
