죽음은 삶의 극단이 아니다. 삶의 과정과 죽음의 과정이 일치하기에 삶의 다른 표현이라고도 볼 수 있다. 하지만 우리는 죽음을 막연히 두려워하고 죽음에 대해 왜곡한다. 이는 곧 삶의 왜곡으로 이어지므로 시기를 막론하고 그에 적합한 죽음교육이 필요하다. 과잉 경쟁에 내몰린 오늘날의 청소년들에게는 그 필요성이 더욱 절실하다고 하겠다. 영화 <8월의 크리스마스>는 매체교육과 관련해서 꾸준히 교재로 활동되어 왔지만, 극 양식으로서의 특징과 관련된 내용에 국한되어 있다. 본 영화를 연출한 허진호 감독은 ‘죽음이란 일상에 지나지 않는 일인지도 모른다는 생각에서 시작된 사람 사는 이야기’를 하고자 했다. 감독의 의도처럼 영화는 시한부의 한 남자의 삶을 통해 죽음에 대해 생각해보게 한다. 본 영화에서 그려지는 죽음도 두려움에 대상이기는 하지만 그것은 일부에 지나지 않는다. 그것은 일상과 별반 다르지 않으며, 누구도 대신할 수 없는 개별적인 것이며, 스스로 적극적으로 맞이해야만 하는 그런 것이다. 우리 모두는 영화 속 주인공과 크게 다르지 않다. 그러므로 우리는 때를 막론하고, 죽음을 생각하고 준비하고 학습해야만 한다. 이런 의미에서 본 영화는
