A Study on the Influences of Neighborhood Built Environment on Air Pollutants in Seoul

It is understood that air pollutants have a negative impact on human health and the quality of life. Therefore, it is essential to explore the determinants of urban air pollutants in the neighborhood in which we live. However, few studies have investigated the fine particulate matter(PM2.5), which has been seriously discussed recently. Therefore, this study aims to identify the influences of neighborhood built environment on air pollutants including NO2, SO2, O3 as well as PM2.5. Air pollutant data was based on the yearly average value of 2014 provided by Seoul Air Quality Information. As a result of the Moran’s I test, spatial autocorrelation was not detected and the general regression model was employed. The main results are as follows; the influences of built environment differ depending on air pollutants. SO2 and O3 were high in the neighborhood with many industrial areas. PM2.5 and NO2 were high in the neighborhood with main roads and average total floor area of commercial areas. but low in the neighborhood with more multi-family housing. Street trees had a negative association with SO2, while the bus stations had a positive relationship. This study will be helpful to establish urban planning and environmental policies and interventions to build eco-friendly and healthy Seoul city.
