현재의 위치와 정체(identity)가 혼란스러울 뿐 아니라 앞으로의 변화가 더욱 가속화될 것으로 전망되는 상황은 역설적으로 과거를 호출해낸다. 호출된 과거는 현재의 우리, 나아가서는 내일의 우리를 말해주는 시금석이자 이정표라고 할 수 있다. 이 글은 여기에 해당하는 몇몇 거시적, 역사적 후보 중에서도 하나의 체제 혹은 제도로서 ‘자본주의’가 가장 그 의미에 부합하는 대상이라고 판단한다. 자본주의는 우리의 과거와 현재, 그리고 상당 부분 미래까지도 설명해줄 수 있는 가장 뚜렷한 사회학적 실체 중의 하나라고 생각되기 때문이다. 자본주의 또한 당연히 변화로부터 자유로울 수 없지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 자본주의의 강력한 힘은 우리가 체감하는 변화의 방향과 내용에까지 직·간접적으로 규정력을 행사하고 있다. 자본주의는 아직도 갱신중이며 현재진행형이다. 바로 이자본주의, 즉 과거의 산물이면서도 엄연한 현재성을 갖는 자본주의는 무엇이며 어떻게 등장하게 되었는가? 상기한 질문의 답은 역사에게로 돌아가서, 다시 말해 역사를 소환해서 찾을 수밖에 없다는 것이 이 글의 주장이다. 본 논문은 봉건제-자본제 이행이라는 측면에서 서구의 역사적 경험을 이론적으로 간략히 정리하여 그로부터 우리사회를 이해하는 자본주의적 변화의 함의를 찾아보고자 한다. 말하자면, 서구의 역사적 경험에서 이행의 주요한 동인(動因)은 무엇이었고, 또 주체는 누구였는지를 조명함으로써, 그로부터 우리사회 자본주의를 들여다보는 준거 내지 비교의 잣대를 마련하려는 것이다. 이 글은 자본주의와 그 이행을 바라보는 네 가지 입장, 즉 계급투쟁론, 시장론, 신제도론, 그리고 이들을 비판적으로 종합하게 하는 맑스의 설명을 경유하여 상기한바 궁극적 목적지에 도달하고 있다.

Paradoxically, the situation in which the current location and identity are confused and the future of change is expected to accelerate further, calls for the past. The past called in is a touchstone and milestone that tells us what we are today, and what we will be tomorrow. This article determines that ‘capitalism’ is the most appropriate choice among several macro and historical candidates, either as a system or as an institution. Capitalism is thought to be one of the most distinct sociological entities that can explain our past, present, and much of our future. Capitalism, too, cannot be free from change, but its powerful power, nonetheless, exerts its regulatory power directly and indirectly, to the direction and content of change we feel. Capitalism is still being renewed and in progress. What is and how did this very capitalism, the product of the past, emerge with a solemn present? As mentioned above, the article argues that the answer to these questions is to return to history and, in other words, summon history to find it. In terms of feudal-capitalization, this paper is intended to summarize the western history experience theoretically in terms of the implementation of the Western capital system and identify the implications of capitalist changes that understand our society from there. In other words, it aims to set the bar for comparison and what was the main driver of the transition in Western historical experiences, and who was the subject. The article reaches its ultimate destination, as recalled, through four views of capitalism and its implementation: class struggle theory, market theory, new institutional theory, and explanation of Marx, which brings them together critically.
