칸트가 꿈꾼 세계시민사회의 비전은 오늘날에도 여전히 현실사회에서 추구되어야 할 정치적인 이념으로서 효력을 갖는다. 정치적인 현실과 이념 간의 불일치 혹은 이념과 현실의 부정적인 관계는 미완의 계몽이라는 역사의 과정에서 펼쳐진다. 또한, 이 관계는 조화되어야 하지만 조화되지 못한 불협화음으로서 역사의 동력으로 작용한다. 칸트가 제안하는 ‘공화국실현’의 정치적인 이념은 역사철학의 이념적인 조망 속에서도, 현실의 정치적 사건과 관련해서도 논의될 수 있다. 이에 관한 가능성은 프랑스혁명에 대한 칸트의 마지막 판단을 통해서 드러난다. 칸트의 역사철학은 공화국의 이념을 실천적인 희망과 믿음의 차원에서 정당화하려 했지만, 프랑스혁명에 관한 마지막 판단에서 칸트는 이념과 현실의 관계와 실현 가능성을 경험적인 사건과 관련시킨다. 이로써 칸트의 정치적인 입장이 급진적으로 해석될 여지가 생긴다. 즉 프랑스혁명을 통한 정치적인 진보의 의미는 도덕적인 당위를 넘어서서 정치적인 사건과 그 사건에 대한 사람들의 지배적인 판단과 결부되었다는 점이다. 이 글은 프랑스혁명에 관한 칸트의 주장에 함축된 의미를 이론과 실천의 관계에서 조망하고, 그 현대적인 의미를 밝히고자 한다.

Kantian cosmopolitanism is still effective political ideals in the 21st century. A discord between political reality and ideal-a disharmony between ideal and reality―has been moving on as a historical process of unfinished enlightenment. Also, this relationship works as the dynamic of history, which is supposed to be harmonious yet is not. The political ideal of ‘realizing Republic’ by Kant could be dismissed regarding the ideas of philosophy of history as well as the real world political event. Kant reveals its realization through his best judgement on the French Revolution. The philosophy of history of Kant tries to justify the ideals of republic in terms of practical hopes and beliefs. However, Kant relates relationship between ideas and reality and the possibility of its realization to practical events. Given this, there is a chance to progressively interpret the political position of Kant. This paper attempts to explain the argument of Kant on the French Revolution and its present-day implications through to relationship between theory and practice.
