방정환은 아동문학가로서 분명한 위치를 점하고 있음에도 그에 걸 맞는 평가를 받지 못한다. 그의 작품들이 문학적 완성도에서 이렇다 할 성과를 내지 못해서다. 하지만 그가 창작하고자 하는 목표를 분명히 하고 그에 맞게 창작을 해 낸 작품이라면 그것이 비록 대중문학에 해당되는 작품이라 하더라도 그 의미는 인정해야 한다. 이를 위해 본고는 방정환 탐정소설에 대해 연구해 보고자 한다. 그의 탐정소설을 본격적으로 다루고 있는 논문은 두 편이다. 최애순은 방정환 탐정소설을 재미와 계몽의지를 드러낸 작품으로 평가한다. 조은숙은 방정환 탐정소설이 소년소설의 서사 문법을 정형화한다는 점을 평가한다. 이들의 평가는 방정환의 탐정소설 연구에 있어 나름의 의미를 지닌다. 다만 이 두 논문이 방정환이 창작의도에 맞춰 소설을 창작해내고 있는 점을 본격적으로 논의하고 있지 않다는 점이 본고를 쓰게 된 목적이다. 이를 위해 방정환 창작 탐정소설을 그가 번역했던 탐정소설과의 대비를 통해 비교해 보면 그가 왜 탐정소설을 쓰고자 했는가가 분명해진다. 토도로프의 서사이론을 통해 분석해 볼 때 그의 탐정소설 역시 토도로프가 말하는 탐정소설의 유형을 충실히 이행하고 있다. 물론 그의 창작 탐정소설이 모험소설적 요소를 상당히 많이 드러내고 있어 과연 이를 엄밀한 의미의 탐정소설이라고 할 수 있을까 하는 의문을 제기할 수도 있다. 하지만 방정환의 창작탐정소설은 창작의도가 분명하고 목적의식이 뚜렷하다. 더구나 그가 번역하거나 번안한 성인 대상 탐정소설이 그 시기 같이 존재하고 있음을 놓고 볼 때 그가 왜 소년 대상 탐정소설을 창작하였고 그것을 통해 보여주고자 했던 것이 무엇인지 분명해진다. 방정환이 「소년 사천왕」창작에 앞서 밝히고 있듯이 그는 탐정소설을 통해 당대 독차층인 청소년들에게 재미와 유익을 주고자 한다. 이는 그가 행동으로는 꾸준히 어린이운동 등을 통해 미래 세대를 이끌 청소년을 계몽하면서, 창작으로는 이들이 나아갈 바인 ‘믿을 만한 일꾼’이 되기를 바라는 마음을 탐정소설에 담아내고자 했기 때문이다. 더불어 그의 창작 탐정소설이 점차 탐정소설적 요소에 좀 더 충실한 형태로 변화하고, 여성 탐정의 역할이 능동적이며 주체적으로 변화하고 있다는 점에서도 의미가 있다.

Bang Jeong-hwan is one of the leading figures in the history of Korean children's literature. However, he has been underestimated because his works are not up to the literary standard. He made public why he wrote, and he wrote the stories based on his intention. He should be restored although his works fall into the category of popular literature. To this end, this article studies the detective novels by Bang Jeong-hwan. Up to now there are only two articles that deal with the detective novels by Bang Jeong-hwan. According to Choi, Ae-soon, Bang Jeong-hwan wrote the detective novels for fun and enlightment. Cho Eun-sook concludes that Bang Jeong-hwan standardized the narrative styles of juvenile novels for boys. Their opinions have some meaning in the study of the detective novels by Bang Jeong-hwan. But they didn't consider that Bang Jeong-hwan wrote his novels based on the intention. This is the reason why this article is written. Comparing Bang's detective novels with those which were translated by him, it gets clear why he tried to write the detective novels. Analyzed through Todorov's narrative theory, the detective novels by Bang Jeong-hwan faithfully follows the types of the detective novel that Todorov expounds. Some features of the adventure novel are noticed in his detective novels. So it can be argued that the detective novels by Bang Jeong-hwan are not the detective novels in the strict sense of the genre. However, Bang Jeong-hwan translated and adapted the detective novels for adults at the same time that he wrote the detectives novels for children. It can be said that Bang Jeong-hwan had a clear purpose for writing the detective novels for children. Before he wrote 「The Boy Four Devas」, Bang Jeong-hwan revealed that he wanted to give adolescent readers fun and usefulness through the detective novels. This clearly shows that he unwaveringly tried to enlighten the adolescents through children's movement and write the detective novels in the hope that they will be the reliable adults. As time goes by, his detective novels changed into the genuine detective novels. What is more, female detectives also changed to be more active and independent.
