Written during the censorship of Franco's dictatorship, Vazquez Montalban's Tattoo(1974) was not able to openly criticize society and politics as in the other Carvalho series, but satirizes and criticizes society of that time through the material and formal structure of the work.
The horizontal voices of the various characters in this work, as well as the subversive behavior and imagination of the characters and the rich food and grotesque body description, are in many ways reminiscent of the carnivalism of Russian critic Mikhail Bakhtin. Carnival novels play a critical role in society by decentralizing and overthrowing the society through the preparation of the existing reality and the grotesque reality in the novel. In Tattoo, the lives of various characters in the formal structure of "polyphony" are being reorganized into horizontal order, not vertical structure. The appearance of people, from those directly and indirectly related to the incident, shows that the work also respects the value of freedom and equality, a prerequisite for Carnival, and that it serves as a 'plaza' in which all characters participate as members of Carnival. It also reveals the Spanish society as it was at that time through the hard life of the characters of each social class. The protagonist, Carvalho, is a typical carnival character who defies the social system with his thoughts, actions and imagination and dreams of overthrow. The various characters also play a role as members of Carnival, showing their own lives. The grotesque atmosphere throughout the work is transformed into a carnival's humorous atmosphere through Carvalho's weird behavior, food that is more important to him than anything else in the world, and the optimistic smile on his face. These factors give the reader the opportunity to re-read this work as Bakhtin’s 'Carnivalism' as a literature of resistance to the times and society.
