본 연구에서는 인천의 인구증가에 영향을 미친 내국인 이주자의 출발지와 도착지 분포를 통해 인천으로의 이주 경향을 분석하였다. 1980년대 이전에는 공업화와 도시화의 진행과 함께 농촌에서 인천으로 이주하는 사람이 많았지만, 1980년대에는 서울대도시권에서 진행된 서울의 탈도시화 과정에서 인천을 향한 이주자가 증가하였다. 1990년대 중반 이후에는 경기도에서 인천으로의 이주자가 증가하면서 대도시 생활권의 형성이 고착화하였다. 수도권 출생자의 비중에 비해 이주 직전 수도권에 거주했던 이주자의 비중이 큰 것으로 미루어, 비수도권에서 출생한 후 서울이나 경기를 경유하여 인천으로 이주하는 사람이 많은 것으로 확인되었다. 부평구를 비롯하여 남동구와 미추홀구를 최초 정착지로 선택하는 이주자가 많았으며, 2010년대에는 경제자유구역이 지정된 서구, 연수구, 중구로의 이주인구도 증가 추세에 있다. 수도권 거주자의 부평구 이주경향은 강한 반면, 영남지방 거주자의 부평구 이주경향은 매우 미약하였다. 이주자의 직전 주거지가 지니는 도시화 수준에 따라 인천에서의 최초 정착지선택에도 차이가 있는 것으로 분석되었다.

This paper investigated the trend of migration to Incheon through the distribution of origin and destination of the domestic migration that affected the population growth in Incheon. Prior to the 1980s, a lage population moved from rural region to Incheon with the progress of industrialization and urbanization, but in the 1980s, the number of immigrants from Seoul has increased. Since the mid-1990s, the size of people moving from Gyeonggi-do to Incheon has increased, leading to the formation of metropolitan-centered living area. Considering the proportion of immigrants who lived in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do before migrating to Incheon is larger than the proportion of migrants born in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, numerous people born in non-capital region moved to Incheon via Seoul or Gyeonggi-do. A large number of migrants chose Bupyeong-gu, Namdong-gu, and Michuholgu as their first destinations. In 2010s, the number of migrants to Seo-gu, Yeonsu-gu, and Jung-gu where free economic zones were designated also increased. The tendency to migrate to Bupyeong-gu was very strong in the residents of Seoul metropolitan area, but very weak in the residents of Yeongnam Province. According to the level of urbanization of the places where the migrants has lived, there were also differences in selecting the first destination.
