본 논문의 주목적은 “하나님의 도성”과 세속 도시 사이의 관계를 신학적으로 성찰해보는 데에 있다 더 정확하게 말하자면 본 논문에서 는 우선적으로 도시의 세속화와 “하나님의 도성” 그 자체의 문제를 분석한다. 그런 다음 그러한 하나님의 도성에 대한 이해가 세속 도시에 대하여 어떤 위기를 의미할 수도 있으며 동시에 세속도시의 존재에 어떤 근거를 제공할 수 있는지를 밝혀 보고자 한다. 실제로 근ㆍ현대 이후로 세속화가 급격히 진전되면서 세속화와 “하나님의 도성”은 배타적인 관계는 극에 달할 정도로 고조되어 왔다고 볼 수 있다. 이는 근대 이전에 “하나님의 도성“을 이데아의 세계처럼 인식하면서 현실세계를 비관적인 것으로만 인식하여 왔던 기독교 세계관에 대한 응전일지도 모른다. 이러한 관계는 세속도시의 편에서 뿐만 아니라 “하나님의 도성”을 추구하는 그리스도교의 편에서도 결코 유익하지 못하다. 다행스럽게도 오늘날에는 세속화와 하나님의 도성에 관한 다양한 해석 가능성들이 생겨나고 있다 하늘나라의 도성의 존재가 철저히 의문시 되고 또 부인되고 있는 세속 도시 속에서 어떻게 하나님의 도성에 관한 신학적 해석이 그 설득력을 얻을 수 있겠는가? 그리고 역으로 세속도시가 자신의 근원적인 목적에 일치하는 표상을 재획득 또는 획득할 수 있기 위하여 “하나님의 도성”이 제공할 수 있는 긍정적인 기여는 무엇인가? 이 질문은 오늘날 도시에 관한 계속되는 신학적 논의를 위하여 본질적으로 중요한 의미를 지닌다.
The main purpose of this paper is to consider theologically the relationship between the "city of God" and the worldly cities. More precisely, in this paper first of all the problems of urban secularization and the "city of God" itself will be analyzed. Secondly, Such questions, what kind of crisis such understanding of the city of God may mean for secular cities, and at the same time what kind of ground can be provided to the existence of secular cities, will be clarified. In fact, secularization has rapidly progressed after modern times, and it can be seen that the exclusive relationship between secularization and the “city of God” has grown to the extreme. It may be a response to a Christian world view that has recognized only the pessimistic things of the real world, recognizing the "city of God" like the idealistic world. These relationships are by no means beneficial not only to worldly cities but also to Christians who pursue the City of God. Fortunately, nowaday there is a possibility of various interpretations of secularization and the city of God. In a secular city where the existence of heaven itself is thoroughly questioned and denied, how can theological interpretation of the city of God gain its persuasiveness? And conversely, what kind of the positive contribution the “city of God” can offer to the secular city in oder that the latter re-acquire or obtain ideas that match its fundamental purpose. For the continuing theological debates about today's cities the last question has essential significance.
