This study aims to explain Karl Barth’s reception of the Dortrecht Confession, one of the important text of the Reformed tradition in 17th Century. Especially, it begins with an assumption that Barth places priority on this confession, comparing to other Reformed confessions. Historically, Barth pays attenttion to this confession in his Goettingen period(1921-1925), and gives lectures on it under the title of “the Theology of the Reformed Confessions”(1923) Since then, it was dealt with in his development of his doctrine of Election, which was main theme of the Church Dogmatics. In this context, he analyses the theme of supralasarianism and infralapsarianism considerably, and he synthesizes merits of this concepts in order to develop his doctrine of election, which shows the christocentric character of his theology. In this sense, it can be proved that Moltmann’s opinion or Mouw’s is not proper, which emphasizes the supralapsarian character of Barth’s doctrine, nor can Tseng’s be sustained, which shows infralapsarian character of Barth’s theology. It is also worthy of notice that Barth extends the theme of the Confession to the theme for the practical territory, in that he put attention to the will of God who denies the power of “Nothingness”. Meanwhile, his synthesizing endeavour to the election exposes the danger of apokatasis panton, for it includes the problem of indiscriminating redemption of all mankind. Regarding this, it is to evaluate that his reception of Dortrecht Confession accompishes without more consideration of its implication.
