본 연구는 신약에 대한 칼빈의 주석들에 기초한 기도의 이해를 추구하되 기도와 예정(작정)의 관계성을 탐구한다. 물론 칼빈의 기도론은 그의 교의학적 글들에도 나오지만 주석에는 그의 색다른 이해가 나타난다. 즉 그의 기도론이 <기독교강요> 안에서 은혜의 방편 즉 성령론 안에서 소개되고 기도와 예정에 대한 7|르침이 나란히 순서대로 논의되는 이유를 확인한다. 이 논문은 칼빈의 주석들 중에서도 기도와 예정의 관계를 가장 잘 보여주는 요한복음 17장에 대한 주석과 관계만이 아니라 기도가 먼저 논의되고 예정이 나중에 논의된 이유도 보여주고 성령론 안에서 기도가 논의되는 이유도 보여주는 로마서 8장과 9장에 대한 주석을 주목한다. 결론으로, 기도와 예정이 분리될 수 없는 이유는 요한복음 17장에 기록된 예수님의 기도가 아버지 하나님의 예정된 뜻을 따라 드려졌기 때문이며, 로마서 8장에 의하면 성령의 도우심과 이끄심이 없이는 기도가 가능하지 않기 때문이고 기도를 했음에도 불구하고 우리에게 환난이 임한다고 할지라도 만세 전부터 정하신 하나님의 뜻과 섭리가 있기 때문에 두려워할 필요가 없다는 차원에서 기도 다음에 로마서 9장에서 예정의 교리가 뒤따르기 때문이다. 이처럼 기도와 예정에 대한 칼빈의 온전한 사상을 이해하기 위해서는 그의 교리만이 아니라 주석도 연구해야 한다.

This paper digs into Calvin’s doctrine of prayer, especially in relation to his thought of predestination, based on his biblical commentaries. Calvin’s view on prayer indeed appears in his theological writings (Confession, Catechism, and Institutes) in a systematized form. Calvin’s commentaries, however, elucidate the reason why in The Institutes of Christian Religion (1559) he discusses the doctrine of prayer under the category of pneumatology and puts the doctrine of predestination in the very next. This paper, thus, explores his interpretations of John (Ch.17) and Romans (Chs. 8 and 9), because the former shows Calvin’s understanding on the indivisible relation of prayer and predestination as rooted in Christ’s exemplar of prayer, confirming that prayer is to ask God for the accomplishment of his decreed will, while the latter make evident his intention of placing the doctrine of prayer under the pneumatology before the discussion of predestination, teaching that prayer is impossible without the help and guide of the Holy Spirit and that everything, including even evil things, works good for those who love God and pray to Him. To understand Calvin’s complete thought of prayer in relation to predestination, thus, we should see both his commentaries and theological works.
